There are many types of holster, and holsters can be classified by the type of clip that holds the holster in place. Some holsters are keychain style, while others are belt-clip style. There are also specialized holsters for handguns, shotguns, rifles, or other types of firearms. One type of holster is called a retention holster. This type of holster clips onto the clothing below the waistband and retention means that you cannot move it around - it stays in place. Retention Holsters typically come in two varieties: open-ended (where the loops at one end hang down) and closed-ended (where there is a closure system at one end). The advantage to using an open-ended retention holster is that you have more control over how tight or loose your clothing will fit around your waistband. This can make it easier to conceal your firearm when travelling or when out shopping for clothes. However, this type of holster also has disadvantages; for example if you need to remove your firearm during travel, it may become difficult to do so because you will not be able to access the clip on your belt which would hold the holster in place. “It's all about creating a comfortable shoulder shrug – making sure everything falls naturally as you carry without feeling like every movement could potentially give away what's under your shirt." – acosta

When holster design and technology began to change in the early 1800s, one of the first patent applications for a holster was filed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1801. The invention of the belt holster allowed for more concealment of handguns and also made them less likely to be seen on public transportation. Belt holsters were soon becoming more common in America, with many law enforcement officers using them while on duty. In 1847, John Browning patented his own type of belt holster that allowed firearms to be concealed within the body. This innovation led to the development of modern handguns and helped make America one of the leading powers in world gun culture.
