Oak Creek, Wisconsin is a small town located in the east-central part of the state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Oak Creek has a long and rich history dating back to 1836 when it was founded by John Jacob Astor. The town was named for an oak tree that grew near the original location of the town. The first settler in what would become Oak Creek was Elijah Symonds who arrived in 1836. Symonds cleared land and built a cabin on the banks of the creek. He also raised chickens and pigs, which he sold to farmers in neighboring towns. In 1840, Isaac Larson moved from Iowa to settle in what would become Oak Creek. Larson had come across land that had been donated by his friend Daniel Webster who ran a farm north of Milwaukee called Elm Grove Manor. Webster had given away 10 acres of land for each family member to cultivate as farmland. When Larson acquired this property, he decided to name it after his friend and mentor, Daniel Webster whom he admired greatly. Larson continued to grow crops and sell livestock until 1851 when he bought some additional land adjacent to his original holdings which he renamed Elm Grove Manor Addition.. In 1857, George Stephenson built a wagon road from Green Bay through present day Elm Grove Manor Addition into what is now Oak Creek township . This wagon road served as an important artery connecting different parts of the state during those early years when transportation was not as reliable as it is today In 1860, Augustus Kelley came over from Illinois and started farming on acreage east of present day Elm Grove Manor Addtion . In 1865, Samuel French purchased some additional acreage east of present day Elm Grove Manor Addtion from Augustus Kelley . French began buying land heretofore owned by other farmers and developing it into a township . This allowed him more control over how its lands were used and helped make him one of the most influential men in early Oak Creek history
In 1847, the first white settlers arrived in what is now Oak Creek County, Wisconsin. The area was inhabited by the Menominee tribe of Native Americans for many years before European exploration began. In 1847, fur traders and missionaries began to explore and trade with the Indians in this part of Wisconsin. They discovered rich mineral and land resources here, which made Oak Creek County one of the most successful Indian Territories in America. The first post office in this county was established in 1851. By 1870,Oak Creek had a population of about 400 people. The county seat was originally located at Wausau but it moved to Appleton in 1872. In 1907, Oak Creek became part of Racine County when Racine County was created from parts of Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. By 1920, Oak Creek had a total population of over 10,000 people who lived throughout six townships: Appleton (the original county seat), Beaumont, Bradford, Gresham-Hancock, Hinsdale and La Crosse. The major industries were agriculture (particularly dairy farming), transportation (especially railroads) and manufacturing ( principally shipbuilding). Many successful businesses were founded here during this time including Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and Jobe Corporation (now known as Allstate). Since then, much progress has been made within the community including increased education opportunities; an increase in employment opportunities; development of new neighborhoods; growth of retail stores; and significant improvement to local infrastructure such as highways and public schools
