In 1876, local farmers organized a grain elevator to process lumber brought overland by railroads. By 1888, there were fifteen businesses in town with two banks and six farmsteads around the creek. By 1900, there were twenty-four businesses with three banks and twelve farms around the creek; sawmills had also been built along the creek between 1899 and 1912. A railroad line running through town linking Green Bay with Chicago arrived in 1903 which led to more business development as people traveled south for jobs or goods. In 1907, Oak Creek Post Office moved from its original location on Main Street into a new building designed by architect George Wittell which remains standing today as part of Town Hall Park off Main Street./By 1915, there were thirty-nine businesses in town with four banks; one woolen mill closed down during prohibition but reopened after repeal.; One store closed down during prohibition but reopened after repeal.; During World War II many residents served in the military including six enlistments at Camp Randall where they learned carpentry skills; After war service some returned home while others managed their own businesses until 1984 when all but one business closed down.; Today most of the remaining buildings date back to 1917 when commercial development began along main streets.-Today much of downtown Oak Creek is composed of frame bungalows/cabinets made out of cedar shake or other woods

In 1851, John Nevin founded a flour mill on the northwest bank of the creek. The milling industry declined after World War II but it continued to be important in town until 1971 when it closed its doors due to lack of demand from consumers. In 1954, residents of Oak Creek voted to annex neighboring Eau Claire into their town limits. This annexation created a new business district with more than 50 businesses thatBAB Steel LLC operates today as an industrial park located adjacent to the old flour mill campus on Diversey Drive near South 16th Street and North First Avenue). According to local historian Donald Saylor, "the area around [the] mills became known as 'The Fertile Crescent,' because much of this agricultural land belonged not just to individuals or families but also collectively." This fertile ground allowed for growth in many different industries such as agriculture, textiles, engineering, lumber production and manufacturing throughout the 20th century; while also leaving behind a legacy of architecture that continues today in various buildings like Eau Claire's State Capitol Building (1853) and Wiscasset Landing's Main Street Cinema (1948).

In 1902, a group of settlers organized the Town of Oak Creek to support their farmsteads located east of the village of Riverwest on the Fox River. The first election held in that town was on November 3, 1902. On December 6, 1912, Oak Creek became a city with a population of 513 residents when it merged with neighboring Racine to form what is now Milwaukee.
