New Berlin, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1851 and named for New Berlin, Germany. The population was 11,848 at the 2000 census. New Berlin is located in southern Milwaukee County on the east side of the city of Milwaukee. The first European settlers in what would become Milwaukee County were Germans who arrived from Hanover, Germany as part of the migration to North America that began in 1640. By 1851, there were about 1,000 Germans living in what would become Milwaukee County and many of them had come to purchase land around present-day downtown Milwaukee from Potawatomi Indians. In 1852, Dutch colonists arrived on the west side of Chicago and soon after they too started purchasing land near the mouth of Menomonee River from the Ojibwe people; this area eventually became known as New Berlin because it lay within then-Wisconsin Territory (now Illinois). In 1853, an act passed by Congress designated all of present-day Milwaukee County as part of Michigan Territory and included New Berlin within that territory; thus, when Wisconsin gained statehood in 1856, New Berlin remained within its borders until becoming a municipality within Wisconsin on January 1st, 1958. Prior to its incorporation into municipalities status as a result of Wisconsin's 1959 legislation allowing towns to be created statewide without prior township approval - which was done with no public hearings or vote - New Berlin spent most its history as just another unincorporated farming community nestled among rural farmers south ofMilwaukee on State Street between Washington Avenue and Lake Michigan Boulevard. In 1978 – following years during which much progress had been made both municipally and developmentally – Mayor Don Nehlen renamed streets locally popular names such as "Pioneer Drive" (later shortened to "State") after members or friends who had contributed financially or physically toward building civic institutions like schools or churches across town early during those years before such progress could be realized including future Mayor Tom Barrett himself alumni/friends/family members now working directly for him Downtown! piloted various development projects over time totaling some $160 million dollars downtown & Oak Creek Center being completed starting up Housing First & also other amenities like restaurants coming online thru redevelopment funded entirely thru private donations adult daycare spaces happening comaining along with several high end businesses opened up new housing units adjacent existing businesses during that time frame making many people very proud our current City Manager
