New Berlin, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 3,240 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. New Berlin was founded in 1838 by Danish immigrants as a small farming community on the east side of present-day Milwaukee County. The first post office opened in 1839 and was called "New Amsterdam." In 1852, New Berlin merged with neighboring Racine to form what is now known as Milwaukee County. New Berlin lost its status as an independent town after it became part of Milwaukee County; however, it retains its Name and Designation as a Historic Place within that county. The first white settler in New Berlin was Peter Ziegler who arrived in 1838 from Germany via Raccoon Lake and built a log cabin on his farmstead near where he later erected a sawmill and grist mill for grinding corn into flour for local traders and farmers around him. In 1840, John Whitman moved to the area from Green Bay and started trading goods with Ziegler at his place until 1850 when he moved to what is now Clearfield Township (now Bestwood). By 1860, there were twenty two settlers living in New Berlin including eight men associated with John Whitman's business ventures: lumbering, farming, stone quarrying, carpentry etc. In 1852 new commissioners were appointed to manage affairs within newly formed Milwaukee County which included all towns located therein north of the river Menomonee River including New Berlin except for Racine which remained separate until 1860 when it also became part of Milwaukee County too In 1865 when Wisconsin passed an act establishing public schools throughout the state required each township within school district had one elementary or secondary school assigned thereto; so Whitman Township chose to establish a second high school - now known as West Side High School - within their own boundaries instead of amalgamating with other adjacent townships that already had such schools Wisconsin General Assembly approved plans for a four mile long toll road connecting White Marsh Ferry Landing on Oneida Lake southward through Cedarburg Lakeshire then northward through Waukesha Rapids then eastward through Kenosha just past Sheboygan Falls before terminating at Ravenswood Dam across Menomonee River giving travelers access only during low water levels since early 19th century blacksmith shops operated along this route providing essential supplies needed by travelers Work commenced on this road beginning October 1st1867 but due to funding shortages completed September 15th 1870 making it one day ahead of schedule Due to rapid growth followingWorld War I agricultural production increased while manufacturing jobs vanished leaving many people struggling economically especially those living near large cities like Chicago or Detroit where cheap labor could be found

It grew rapidly during the following years with new construction and growth in trade and industry. In 1850, New Berlin annexed the adjacent villages of Whitefish Bay and North Polar Agricultural Village to form a single municipality with a population of over 1,500 people.
