Neenah, Wisconsin (population: 38,713) is a town in the US state of Wisconsin. The population was estimated to be 41,965 as of the 2010 census. Neenah is located in the Driftless Area of north-central Wisconsin on the eastern edge of the Iron Range National Park. It lies at the junction of two counties, Oneida and La Crosse. The name "Neenah" is said to come from Siouan words meaning 'place near a stream'. In 1818, General Anthony Wayne's forces passed through this area on their way to defeat Native American leader Chief Badacombe at what is now Tomahawk Lake. The settlers in this area were Dutchmen who had moved there from New Amsterdam in 1664. They named their new settlement after Mi'kmaq word neenga which means 'stream near a village'. The first post office was established in 1827 and became known as Hennepin County's only county seat until it was moved to Neenah in 1868. At that time it also became one of the most important centers for Methodist missionary work in northern Wisconsin. In 1862, when Northwestern University began operations nearby at Evanston, students used Neenah as their temporary campus while they built their own buildings and laboratories; Northwestern eventually returned to Chicago after spending only nine months at Neenah. In 1912–13 Neenah developed an agricultural fair which soon became an annual event called "The Great Lakes Agricultural Fair". After World War II, heavy industries such as aluminum smelting started moving into the town and many new businesses opened up including several breweries and auto parts stores; however much economic decline followed during the 1970s due to changing patterns of industry throughout Midwest America and finally rising costs associated with World War III military production facilities throughout central Wisconsin Since 2000, much development has occurred around downtown NEENAH center consisting of several high-rise apartment buildings completed by local developers along with several parking garages/residential developments next door including a major light rail station being built serving both city neighborhoods within walking distance as well as suburban communities outside walkable radius

The growth of industry caused many businesses to leave or be moved away from town and by 1945, only six businesses remained in Neenah that were still open today: three banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company and State Street Bank), two garment stores (Burlachs Bros. & Cie., Incorporated) and oneauto dealership (John Deere). Many major history events have occurred within or near Neenah during its time as an agricultural center or industrial city including: numerous wars fought nearby; significant migrations of people across America; development of air travel through Wright brothers invention; establishment of Milwaukee as capital of Wisconsin; creation of credit unions which helped create shopping malls throughout central Wisconsin; rise to prominence as an educational center following institutions such as Marquette University and UW-Milwaukee; decline beginning in the early 21st century due to loss of jobs linked to digital technology
