Neenah, Wisconsin is a town in Green County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. The name Neenah derives from the Ojibwe word neta meaning "to twist." The first settler in what is now Neenah was Elisha Weiser in 1836. The first gun swivels were patented by Eli Whitney on November 9th, 1837. They consisted of an iron hoop with two circles cut out of it and screwed onto the barrel of a rifle or shotgun. When drawn back and forth, the circles would cause the gun to rotate so that rounds could be fired more easily from the breech end of the weapon. Neenah is a town in Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Neenah County. The name, which means "place where many people live," has been borne by several other towns in the area including Racine and Menomonee Falls. The first Europeans to visit what is now Neenah were French fur traders in 1669 who named it Nouan-Aquitaine (New France). A post office was established at Neenah in 1837, and the town began to grow rapidly thereafter due to its location along the Milwaukee River and its close proximity to major agricultural markets. In 1854, the city of Milwaukee was established on the east side of the river, cutting off most of Neenah's growth; however, after that time much of Neenah's growth came from settlers moving into neighbouring towns such as Racine and Menomonee Falls. In 1907, Neenah became one of sixteen original municipalities within then-WisCONSIN statehood; it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became a part of the larger city of Milwaukee. On July 15, 1957 voters passed a referendum approving merger with neighboring town Racine into Milwaukee; this merger occurred two days later on July 17th under Wisconsin law without any prior vote by either village or councilor. In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place in downtown Neenah thanks to funding from both private investors as well as government grants/initiatives such as green infrastructure investments which have helped create new jobs and increase retail revenues while preserving historic buildings and architecture. Downtown renovations saw a large expansion project completed in 2013 that added over 100 loft apartments overlooking downtown Milwaukee which brought new business development directly onto Main Street which also saw renovation for worship spaces for churches as well as more public space for residents - all while maintaining historical charm unique to both villages combined!
