Neenah is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It takes its name from Neenah Creek (then known as the Neches River), which flows through the town and empties into the Kankakee River. The first settler in what is now Neenah was James C. Neuman and his wife Martha A. Knight on July 12, 1847. They were part of the group of pioneers that moved west from Chicago in 1846 to create Windy City land grant townships including Neenah Township on November 1, 1846. The township was organized on December 6, 1849 when a committee appointed by Governor David Hunter recommended it to the state legislature for incorporation as a village with a right of vote for all its citizens over 21 years of age male or female regardless of place of birth or residence. In 1860, settlers John Haggerty and Isaac Griggs purchased 4 acres (1 km2) northeast of present-day Neenah from Joshua Larkin for $100 cash plus $20 worth of goods they had brought with them east from Illinois. On October 5, 1861 – less than two weeks after Lincoln's inauguration as President – Griggs donated land to build an Asylum for insane women and men near present-day downtown Neenah for free if it ever became necessary to house such patients within the township limits; this donation remains one of Townshend's most famous landmarks today. In 1865, there were only 36 people living in what is now Keokuk County when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated; by 1880 there were over 2200 residents in Iaacochea Township alone! By 1890 everyone living south of Iowa Avenue had left - except 10 farmers who lived on section 11 “north side” just east of present day Uptown! The earliest post office opened in 1862 at Green Bay but closed due to lack thereof customers! Postmaster General Gifford Silliman announced plans to open another post office at Neenah because he felt “the public mind must be aroused” about speedier service between Milwaukee and Des Moines On February 1st 1870 Jno Dutton set up shop selling supplies out back from his farmstead located off US Highway 281 between US Highway 151 & US Highway 16 about half way between Green Bay & modern day downtown Neenah Dutton later became owner/operator (1887-1927) & general manager (1927-1940) Jno Lundgrens grocery store chain which grew rapidly becoming one Wisconsin’s largest commercial businesses during prohibition era Dutton died suddenly at home early morning Sunday January 14th 1927 aged 82 years old leaving his grocer’s empire intact until his death
Neenah, Wisconsin was founded on October 4, 1836 by David Whitcomb. The town was named in honor of General Anthony Wayne who perished at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1813.
