Muskego, Wisconsin is a small town in the eastern part of Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Muskego is located on the east side of the Mississippi River and has a full-time school system as well as a few churches and businesses. Muskego's economy depends on agriculture, with crops such as wheat, corn, soybeans, and potatoes being grown. In addition to local businesses there are several large agricultural companies that have their headquarters here including Archer Daniels Midland Co., Waukesha County Agricultural Federation Inc., Crossroads Cement Inc., and Monsanto Co.. The name "Muskego" originated from an Indian word meaning "to cross over." The first settlers in this area were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1795. They named their village Nieuw Amsterdam after New Amsterdam onthe North River in Manhattan which they saw while travelling downriver. This was only one of many villages established by these early settlers; others include Kalkataan (later called Heuvelton), Hubbardston (founded by Nicholas Hermanus), Andover (founded by Peter Minuit), Menomonie (founded by Simon Metcalf), Hennepin (founded by David Dalrymple) and Winnebago (established by John Jacob Astor). In 1836 the first railroad reached this area when track was laid through Muskego Township from Racine to Stevens Point. At this time Muskego had about 150 residents but it grew rapidly due to demand for land surrounding the new railroad yards. By 1840 Muskego had 9 buildings and a population of 30 people! The townspeople built two churches – First Baptist Church which was completed in 1839 and Second Presbyterian Church which was finished in 1847 – along with several other homes before following the lead of Racine County to approve incorporation into Racine County on February 14th, 1851. Over the years, Muskego has made many contributions to Wisconsin history. One of the most famous residents of Muskego was Peter J. Schuyler who served as Mayor from 1913 to 1917 and as Governor from 1923 to 1927. He is also credited with helping create Milwaukee County and building several landmarks in the city such as Waukesha County Courthouse and Park, which still stands today. Today, Muskego continues to be a vibrant community with exciting cultural opportunities available for all Its citizens. The downtown district is home to several popular boutiques, restaurants, bars/clubs and theaters making it an ideal place to live or visit while exploring nearby towns and villages such as Fond du Lac or Iron Mountain.
The first European to visit Muskego was Jean Nicolet, who explored the area in 1739. The land that is now Muskego County was part of the Fox Purchase from the French in 1837. In 1840, a post office was established at Muskego and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1904. In 1851, the town acquired its own school system and by 1865, there were six schools operating within the community. A railroad line reached Muskego in 1872 and this led to increased business opportunities for the town. By 1904, Muskego had a population of over 1,000 people and by 1920 it had grown to over 4,000 residents. In 1923, an act of Congress authorized the erection of a national monument to honor American soldiers killed during World War I. The monument was built and dedicated on May 10th 1928.
