MUSKEGO, WISCONSIN HISTORY Muskego is a town in the Muskegon County of Michigan, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Ojibwe word mok’gah meaning "water source" or "spring." In 1835, the first white settlers arrived in what is now Muskego Township and named it Muskoka Township after themselves. They were led by Captain John Semenoff and his group of Russian refugees who had come overland from Canada. Muskoka was also where Isaac Brock founded Brockville in 1795. In 1836, Nicholas Biddle erected a sawmill on Big Creek which became one of the largest in Michigan and began to produce lumber for local homes and stores. This mill dramatically increased muskegon County's production of lumber which helped contribute to its growth as a city during the early 19th century. By 1850, Muskego had become an important transportation center with its own railroad line connecting it to Detroit and other cities across Michigan and north into Ohio. The first store in Muskego opened on Main Street in 1851 by Fenton Atherton & Company. It was followed by another store on Third Street in 1860 by Jno Copley & Co.. Over time more stores appeared along Main Street including Goudreau Bros., Weiser Bros., Taylor & Company, Sears Roebuck & Co., Davenport Brothers (later Wm.) Davenport and Sons (later Jno.'s) company until 1899 when Pillsbury Foods purchased all these businesses for $1 million making Muskego one of America's largest commercial towns during that era! Muskego was settled in 1847 by John and Lovisa Muskego. They named their new town after the muskegos that they saw near their farmstead.
