Muskego, Wisconsin is a small town in the Keweenaw Peninsula region of Michigan. It is about 25 miles (40 km) south of Grand Rapids and about 30 miles (48 km) west of Petoskey. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. Muskego is part of the Muskegon Heights–Muskegon City School District. The first Europeans to visit Muskego were French traders in 1641-1642. The area was fur-trading territory at that time. The first settlement in what became Muskego Township was on East Main Street near the present day intersection of West Main and North Gorham Streets in 1824 by John Fenton and his family. They named their township after General George Washington's home state, Virginia, but this name never caught on and it reverted to Muskego Township when it organized as a township in 1836. In 1870, lawyer Jens Jensen opened his law office on Third Avenue east of downtown Muskegon Heights with three rooms rented for $10 per month each from local officials including Mayor John Salka and Clerk David Boeschman. In 1871, he became the first white person to be elected mayor of Muskegon Heights when he won over incumbent Nathan Hickey by a vote of 2-1 with one abstention due to illness; Jensen had run as an open candidate without party affiliation or limit on who could vote." He also served as solicitor general for Wayne County from 1871-1875; during this time he helped create county court rules which later became state law." Citizens’ group forms to help improve roads In 1906 citizens formed the “First National Aid Society” which donated land for a public park known as Park Rowdy (later renamed Park Square). This society also built a sawmill, store, post office and schoolhouse on South Center Street between Third Avenue and Second Avenue east of town center." The First National Aid Society still exists today as United Way

Muskego is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The Muskego Indian Reservation was established in 1855 and included present-day Muskego village as well as portions of the towns of New Berlin and Waukesha. The reservation covered an area that extended from what is now the city of Milwaukee to eastern Wisconisn and included most of today's Douglas County. In 1872, when the federal government shifted all Indian reservations east of Lake Michigan to Walker County, Muskego became one of these new county seats. In 1928, local officials decided to change their name to Muskego after a nearby stream which they said had "the prettiest water current in the land." However, some residents objected to this change because it sounded like they were being forced into a British name. In 1930, after more than two years of discussion, a committee voted 3-2 to change the name back to its original spelling – Muskego – after consulting with Native American elders who urged for it. Muskego first attracted settlers during the early 1800s when land near where it stands was available for purchase or Donation Land purchases by missionaries working for various Christian denominations on behalf of native nations throughout North America. Many early settlers came from England and Wales who had arrived in large numbers during the 19th century gold rush era following discovery of new gold resources in California and Oregon. After purchasing additional land near present-day Muskego village in 1855 (some 20 miles northeast of where he would later settle), Colonel John Floyd purchased 2154 acres (9 hectares) comprising much of what is now Douglas County including what are nowmuskEGO VillageA&BZ located on Twp Rd 507 & 518 NNE (now Hwy 54). By 1860 many farmers had moved into this newly acquired territory including James Fenton who erected his first home on Richards Branch Road just west sideof Twp Rd 507 & 518 NNE about 1830 AGO . Numerous other pioneers also settled here over time including: George Stephenson; Elijah Hubbard; Isaac Dexter; Solomon Starbuck; William Lyon Hammond; Henry Morton Stanley Jr.; Cyrus Vance Smith Sr.; Wm D’Arcy McGeeJr.; John Mapes among others In 1865 President Andrew Johnson issued Executive Order No 8802 providing for “a systematical inquiry into causes which have contributed towards recent disunion between different races within our country” The order called for “an inspection by competent authority …into all institutions…in which any white person may be interested” This led directlyto muskEGO VillageA&BZ being chartered by Govt Apr 25 1870 & opened Apr 26 1870 under directionof Capt JF Floyd @ $10 per month plus board & fare
The town of Muskego was founded in 1847 by pioneers John and Eliza Musick. The Musicks were the first white people to settle in what is now Muskego County, Wisconsin. They built a log cabin on the banks of the White River. The cabin served as their home until they removed to a more permanent location in 1851. In 1856, they married Miss Anna Belle Elwood, also from Muskego County. The couple started a small farm in what is nowMuskego County and raised their family there untilAnna Belle died in 1917. Mr. and Mrs. Musick are buried at Elmendorf Cemetery (now part of Lake View Cemetery).
