The Muskego community was established in 1855. The first post office was established in 1857. The community development began with the construction of a small school, which served the community for several years. A larger school, called the Muskego Male and Female Academy, was built in 1861. In 1872, a fire destroyed most of the town businesses and infrastructure including the school. However, due to donations from local residents and businessmen, reconstruction began quickly and soon enough all of the town's businesses were back up and running again. The Muskego Male and Female Academy became an art institute known as "The Art Institute of Wisconsin". In 1924, it changed its name to "Muskego State Teachers College" after becoming stately new facility on University Avenue in Milwaukee.
