By 1916, Mount Pleasant had also become known as "the center of American mountaineering." Mount Pleasant is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin that was founded in 1836 by German immigrants. The town grew rapidly and by 1860 had over 10,000 residents. In 1868, the town became an incorporated municipality and began to develop into a major agricultural center with large plantations and small farms. The population of Mount Pleasant peaked in 1910 at 20,000 people and decreased to 14,500 during the Great Depression. However, following World War II the population reached its peak again before declining gradually until 2000 when it numbered 13,700 people.

In 1871, a group of men from Green Bay purchased land west of Mount Pleasant which they called White River County because there were no white people living there then. They built their first house on what would become North Fourth Street. In 1872, they organized themselves as the Northwest Indian School District #2 and began teaching children how to read and write using Dakota Sioux language and culture along with English language instruction. A post office was established at Mountpleasant in 1886 and remained operational until it closed in 1951 due to low postage rates within the Milwaukee metropolitan area at that time! The first school building erected in Mountpleasant was a one-story frame structure designed by Jno Henshaw and built around 1860-1861 whenNWIAD #2 operated out of this building from 1886-1951 according to federal records! This building still stands today on North Fourth Street just east (but not along) of Presentation Avenue near Park Slope Elementary School! In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson dedicated an electric streetlight system to be used throughout NWIAD #2 including Mt pleasant as well as many other nearby communities such as Wauwatosa (#4), Sheboygan Falls (#5), Racine (#6), Menomonee Falls (#7), Nekoosa Heights (#8), Ashwaubenon Heights#9 & 10, Fox Pointe Woods #10 & 11; Willowbrooks Village #11 & 12; Beaver Dam Village#12; Brookfield village#13; Watertown village#14 etc…..This system became known formally as "the Wilson Project".
