Mount Pleasant is a small town in the town of Plymouth, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2000 census. The first white people to settle in Mount Pleasant were John and Rebecca Neuman who arrived in 1837. They founded a farm on the east side of the river near where present-day River Road meets State Highway 49. The Neumanns raised chickens and cows and sold milk from their home until they moved to Illinois in 1861. In 1892, Julius A. Kapp built a sawmill on the north side of the river. He operated it until his death in 1955; his son, Julius Jr., continued running it until it closed in 1984. The first post office was established at Mount Pleasant in 1849; it was called "Plymouth". It was renamed "Mount Pleasant" on February 2, 1891 by act of Congress under then-President Benjamin Harrison because of its location on Mount Pleasant Hill (now part of Plymouth). Mount Pleasant is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 6,191 at the 2010 census, making Mount Pleasant the most populous municipality in Dane County. The name "Mount Pleasant" was given to the community by General Winfield Scott during his 1849 campaign for governor of Wisconsin. The first permanent settler in what is now Mount Pleasant was John Morrison who arrived in 1792. He and his family were among the first Europeans to settle near present-day Wausau Rapids on the Fox River. In 1835, Amos Kendall bought land east of present-day Mount Pleasant from William Dibble for $2,000 and named it Kendall Prairie after himself and his son Amos Kendall Jr., who had also Vernon Prairie as a home base before moving to Mount Pleasant in 1836. In 1848, Daniel Payne purchased part of Kendall Prairie from Kendall and named it Payne Land after himself and two friends: Peter Prentice (a lawyer) and Ezekiel Webster (a surveyor). The town began to form when settlers started arriving from easternWisconsin Territory following its creation as a result of the Minnesota Organic Act on February 14, 1850. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Mount Pleasant with an average of 10 households per person; this number increased dramatically during the late 1840s when Wausau became a center of grain production due to new methods developed at nearby Mankato State University by Danish scientist Rasmus Rasmussen while he was teaching at that institution. The northern terminus of Route 9 northwest of town was chosen as the center point for this early growth because it then existed as both a Via Rail line northward from Milwaukee – about halfway between Chicago and Minneapolis – as well as an important commercial artery leading southward along Lake Michigan through Manitowoc County into Iowa Territory before terminating at Dodge City, Kansas on July 1st 1859 serving passengers en route to Omaha, Nebraska via Chicago's Union Station! It should be noted that even though Route 9 served primarily local traffic until its truncation in 1922 when Interstate 94 replaced it throughout most of Walker County west thereof; all but one stop along that stretch still remain today: just east of downtown Mountpleasant on Highway 24! And although I-94 has since Cut off much more adjacent rural Walker County than did predecessors I-94 & US Hwy 24 together back then; they all still serve locals poorlyexcept perhaps 8 miles or so outside downtown where I-94 meets US Hwy 94 again just past exit 20A which provides access onlyto Rte 224 which heads northeast towards Racine; Racine being some 80 miles upstream!) Just prior to their truncation I-94 & US Hwy 24 intersected each other just northeastof downtown Mtpleasant becoming Rte 224 which leads northeast towards Racine.; Racine being some 80 miles upstream!)
In 1855, the town of Mount Pleasant was organized and named in honor of General David Butler. The first settler in Mount Pleasant was John Haggerty. In 1870, a post office was established in the town and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1904.Mount Pleasant experienced some difficulties during the Gold Rush because there were not enough people to support the population growth and development. The first school in Mount Pleasant opened on October 9, 1871. A public library followed soon afterwards and is still open today.On December 10, 1881, a fire destroyed most of the business buildings in Mountpleasant while also damaging several homes. Afterward, many businesses changed their names to reflect their new location or became part of larger organizations such as The Milwaukee Journal Company which later merged with The Milwaukee Daily Times company. Some notable residents who lived and worked in Mountpleasant include: Elias Howe (1841-1921), Jens Jensen (1888-1972), Norman Kapp (1886-1964), John Wessels (1909-1982) and Everett Huddle (1920-.).
