Mount Pleasant is one of four villages in Racine County. The village of Mount Pleasant was organized in 1857 from parts of Sheboygan and Waukesha counties. It became a town on March 26, 1871. The name comes from Indian Ridge, an elevation about north of Mount Pleasanttownship on the south side of the Milwaukee River. In 1870, when Racine County was organized, Mountpleasant had a population of 350 people and it increased to 375 by 1880. By 1900, it had reached 1,000 people and by 1910 it had peaked at 1,826 people. In 1951, when Racine County merged with Milwaukee County to form the current Milwaukee-Racine metropolitan area, Mountpleasant remained within Racine County but lost its status as a town and became part of the new city limits. In 2011 it suffered another loss when most of its businesses closed due to low unemployment rates in neighboring cities during that time period. However since then there have been some slight uptick in economic activity thanks to new jobs being created in nearby Greenfield Park and Menomonee Falls which are adjacent to Mount pleasant Village properties

On July 1, 1830, Richardson and his wife built a log cabin on their new farmstead and named it Mount Pleasant in honor of General George Washington's home near Princeton, New Jersey
