Mount Pleasant is a small town located in the town of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mount Pleasant were French traders and fur-traders who came through the area in 1763. The area was first called "Nissen's Prairie" because General Nicholas Le Moyne had his headquarters there during his 1809 campaign against Red River Native Americans. early settler George Nelson named his farm "Mount Pleasant," after Lord Palmerston's home in England which he had seen while on a trip overland across North America in 1784. Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin was a small town in the northeast corner of Wisconsin at the junction of counties of La Crosse and Manitowoc. The name is derived from "mthood" or "mountain," and means place on high ground. The first settler in what is now Mount Pleasant was James Henniker who arrived in 1838. In 1847, John Fauer purchased the land around present-day Mount Pleasant from the Sauk people. The first school in Mount Pleasant was built in 1848 by Mrs. Prentice and Mr. Greenhalgh. A second school was built in 1850 by Mr. Dolan and Mrs. Bicknell, both teachers from La Crosse. In 1861, Judge Robert O'Brien donated land to build a gristmill on the banks of the river near present-day Mount Pleasant Drive/Route 10A for use as a public school district administration building. In 1865, when Milwaukee County was created, Mount Pleasant became part of it and experienced some growth due to new development along Highway 10A between La Crosse and Manitowoc Counties which saw an influx of workers during that time period seeking jobs in manufacturing centers such as Milwaukee and Chicago. In 1916, when Niagara Falls Bridge opened up access to Lake Michigan through rural areas east of Marquette County, many residents left their homes for better opportunities near Lakeshore Boulevard/Highway 9W north of town while others relocated closer to downtown where they could enjoy more amenities including libraries, theaters and other cultural events happening throughout Milwaukee County at that time with nightlife being especially popular among those living near downtowns across the county line into Canada (formerly known as Upper Canada). As businesses grew larger within downtowns outside city boundaries over time bus service increased connecting these areas with each other making commuting easier for work commuters as well as visitors; however parking difficulties continued to plague those trying to find space within either limits which led some businesses moving out into suburbs or beyond during this time period which ultimately has negative consequences on today's economy since fewer employees are located close together supportive economic concentrations instead resulting in less job satisfaction overall among employees working at these companies
