In 1851, a group of men in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin began to purchase ammunition. They were the first civilians to do so in that area. The men had grown interested in firearms because of the excitement surrounding the Pony Express and other transportation routes. Ammunition was necessary for these operations and was also needed for hunting and target shooting. The men bought ammunition from local merchants and then stored it away in their homes. Mount Pleasant is a town in the Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waukesha–Wisconeshire Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Mount Pleasant Paper Mill was founded in 1875 and closed in 1984. The town of Mount Pleasant was organized on February 3, 1857, from portions of Racine and Waukesha counties. On November 6, 1860, it became a city by charter. The city's boundaries changed several times over its early years; it remained a town until May 4, 1867 when it became a village under the name "Mount Pleasant". On December 12, 1890 it became an incorporated settlement with a population of 1,500 people and name change to "Mount Pleasant Township". On October 15, 1924 the township merged with Racine to form Racine–Racine County. On January 1, 1927 that county added Burlington as a new township which also merged with Racine to form that county again on January 1. Burlington then separated from racine on July 1, 1971 becoming its own municipality once again. On January 1st of 2006 Mountpleasant Township lost its charter due to decliningpopulation and changes in government structure within WI which had resulted in many townships losing their charters throughout the state during this time period; this effected Mountpleasant as well along with other smaller townships in southeastern WI who also lost their charters- most notably Arlington Heights (IL), Oak Creek (WI), Whitefish Bay (MN), Menomonee Falls (WI) among others

The early Mount Pleasant economy was based on agriculture and hunting. As American independence grew closer, many mountaineers migrated to what is now Wisconsin to join the fight for independence. Some members of the settlement developed successful business ventures such as lumbering, fishing, cheese manufacturing and banking. In 1848, when Wisconsin became an independent state, some residents decided to move toMilwaukee so that they could have more opportunities for economic success. Today there are several small communities located around Mount Pleasant including: Bridgewater (on Greenfield Road), West Allis (on Niles Avenue), Oak Creek (near downtown), Racine (near Wauwatosa) and Appleton (on Western Ave). These communities provide social support while also keeping memories alive of what life was like back then when families lived together in close-knit groups surrounded by nature
The first white person to live on Mount Pleasant was John F. Smith in 1836. In 1840, the United States government granted land to the town for a military post. The post was renamed Fort Belvoir in 1851 and in 1865 it became the main base of operations for General Ulysses S. Grant during his campaigns against the Confederacy.
