Monroe, Wisconsin is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Monroe was platted in 1854. The town was named for James Monroe, 20th President of the United States. The village of Monroe did not form until 1872 when it became part of what is now Door County and also became a county seat. In 1898, the village merged with the towns of River Falls and Waukesha to form what is today called Monroe-Waukesha County. The first settler in Monroe was John Purdy who arrived on October 17, 1854 from Illinois via the Prairie du Chien wagon trail. He built a log cabin on an existing farmstead about two miles north of present day Monroe Center. Purdy's land included much of what is now south side of Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard and east side of Waukesha Avenue in downtown Monroe center today as well as most parts of current day River Falls and Waukesha counties including present day Forest Hills which were then Agricultural Township No 2 (now Vernon). In its early years, Monroe had no schoolhouse; residents arithmetic lessons were taught by subscription from those who could afford it or by using publicRecording tickets which were given out at fairs in nearby Racine (now Bay View) or Greenfield (now West Allis). A post office was established here on December 12, 1857 by order of US Senator David Schuyler for citizens travelling between Racine and Greenfield along old Route 35(now I-94) during winter days when no other means existed to ensure mail delivery In 1861 local officials decided to build a new schoolhouse on property donated by Revue de la Fayette C., widowof George Washington Carver which sat west off Old State Road 3 near present day University Park Drive/Ulysses S Grant Boulevard in downtown Monroe center today where classes first began on November 10th 1865 under Grady Judd with instruction offered Wednesday mornings until 1870 under similar conditions until brick construction began on September 25th 1870 Monroe achieved city status on February 16, 1893 when voters approved annexation into Milwaukee through an election held that year following passage by referendum Measure H entitled "Annexation Petition" . On March 4th 1893 commissioners reported that annexations had been completed within their jurisdiction meaning that all but one town within Door County had become incorporated into Milwaukee . Thereafter all doors opened to further incorporation requests from other towns located within our county . The exceptions being Beloit Town which refused annexation because it felt its boundaries should remain unchanged ; however this did not stop others from seeking incorporation into Milwaukee over time leaving us with just Door County

While not all events at which Monroe played a role are considered historical landmarks by everyone, many aspects that made it an important community are still remembered today such as its strong sense of community organization and its dedication to education opportunities for its residents
