In 1902, four blocks north of downtown on West Center Street, brick buildings were erected to house a private school called Friends School which had been organized by John Swanton around 1796 to provide education for poor children near his home on State Street. It operated until 1943 when it burned down due to lack of maintenance. The community began an effort to rebuild what had been lost with Swanton's help and held a fund-raiser event on October 8, 1943 which netted $4,000 within two days from individuals across southeastern Wisconsin who contributed food, clothing, money or goods necessary for rebuilding Friends School along with other needed projects such as new roads and streetlights throughout town center . This type of event continued annually through 1951 when donations dried up because World War II intervened . A second Friends School building opened at 501 W Jackson St., about one mile south east of downtown Monroe during 1946-1948 although it too failed to maintain its own roofline during various expansions/contractions; this building remains today as property belonging to Monroeville Historical Society Incorporated . In 1957 when state hugeness caused most businesses consolidation or relocation within city limits several residents including Delia Hutton formed their own corporation "The Community Schools Corporation" whose purpose it still remains today - providing educational opportunity regardless of location within city boundaries without having any impact on public funding - unprecedented among American towns same century !! Many current residents have long memories associated with this unique aspect of their early lives !!
