Monroe, Wisconsin is a small town located in the state of Wisconsin. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 census. Monroe is the only municipality in Monroe County. The name "Monroe" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "lot of wood." In 1852, the first post office in Monroe opened and was called lot #1 because it was on the first lot of land given to settlers in that area. The town hall building and many other buildings were built between 1907-1913 by John J. Ritchie. The town's economy has been based on agriculture for most of its history. Today, Monroe has a strong downtown presence with several businesses including a library, bank, and grocery store. Additionally, there are several churches and schools within walking distance of each other as well as plenty of places to eat and drink within driving distance. One interesting fact about Monroe is that it has had two presidents - Ulysses S Grant (1865-1897) and Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1945).Both men were natives of New York City and were born into prominent political families when they moved to Milwaukee to become leaders in their respective states during the Progressive Era years (the late 19th century through World War I).

Monroe is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Monroe was Nicholas Flournoy on October 15, 1843. The community was named after James Monroe, then the United States Vice President and original Territorial Governor of Wisconsin Territory who had come to help settle that portion of the state west of Chicago on August 10, 1836. After taking office as territorial governor on December 12th,1843 (just prior to US presidential election), Monroe established public schools and built a courthouse which still stands today - one of only a few remaining buildings from his time as Territorial Governor. In 1859, Tilton & Curtis began construction on an iron Works which would become one of the largest employers in town and would continue producing aluminum cans until its closure in 1978. The company also erected a large number of homes for workers during this time period including many 1915 Craftsman Bungalows which are still standing today and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On July 3rd 1906 – less than two months after becoming an incorporated town – Monroe hosted its first parade with floats created by local students from nearby Eau Claire. At that time it was considered quite unusual for towns to hold parades but soon became standard procedure in most communities across America when new towns were formed or changed their name/location/. The main thoroughfare through town at that time was State Street with numerous smaller streets branching off it including Main Street which served as both a commercial district as well as residential artery for many years before being replaced by Uptown Avenue later in that century; while School Road ran parallel to it south-southwest until deleted by developer John A Frey following streetwidening projects along Wisconsin Avenue back then even though School Road remained important access route into town from outlying neighborhoods long past its heyday thanks principal among them being West Allis High School located just east of Uptown via current State Street then north-northwest onto Dearborn Ave thence southwest onto Town Center Blvd thence northwest onto State Street

Monroe was a small town in the east side of Wisconsin during the early 1800s. The town was founded by John Monroe in 1815, and it prospered until the mid-19th century when the area became an agricultural community. The population of Monroe peaked at around 100 in 1830, but it plummeted to just 10 by 1850 due to differential growth rates between west and east side of the state. However, after a period of rapid growth, Monroe experienced another downturn in the 1870s due to changes in farming techniques and demographics. In 1881, Monroe merged with neighboring towns Watertown and Hudsonville to form what is now known as Madison County. Despite its recent resurgence, Monroe has had only limited success since becoming a county seat.
