Monroe was founded in 1854 by James Monroe, the fourth President of the United States. The town was named for him because it is located in what was then known as Dearborn County. In 1872, Monroe became a city and remained so until 1959. It has since been annexed by Milwaukee. Monroe is located in western Wisconsin on the border of Clear Lake and Menomonee Falls counties. The population of Monroe peaked at 23,811 in 1940 but has slowly declined since that time. Its current population is 10,903. The economy of Monroe depends heavily on agriculture and fishing which provide most of its income. The first settler to arrive in Monroe was John Beasley who built a cabin on the banks of Menomonee Falls in 1829. Other early residents included John Prentice (1829-1901), Elijah Lovejoy (1830-1902), Samuel Pierpont (1832-1945), Nicholas Fenton (1835-1920), Ebenezer Morse (1837-1900), Amos Pond (1839-1924), Peter Pettit (1800-1881), Edward Cushing (1794-1858) and Thomas Wightman(died 1863). The first post office opened in 1855 with Wightman as its first occupant under the name "Wadsworth." In 1868, Monroe became part ofMilwaukee when that city annexed all of eastern Clear Lake County including Friendship Heights east thereof including parts of Menomonee Falls Township west thereof excluding those portions now within Milwaukee proper including that portion now within Monroe; this annexation created a community near the junction where Interstate 94 and U.S.-Wisconsin Highway 38 cross each other which continues to be called Milwaukee should it ever separate from Milwaukee County again; this community became known locally as "Monroe". As part of this merger process various streets were renamed following annexation: Main Street became I highway 94A while Racine Avenue became I highway 90A; Third Street became W highway 78A while Fourth Street became I highways 54B & 58B; Clinton Boulevard became I highway 438D while Foster Boulevard becomes I highways 134C & 138C among others In 1957 both cities merged into one larger municipality with their original borders unchanged although some streets continued to be named after their respective predecessor cities while others were renumbered according to county lines although they remain still called by their old namesakes today The contiguous menomonee falls area had long been an agricultural region noted for its fertile soil many miles wide open to cultivation on either side of rapids or along streams feeding these waters or lying between them forming valleys richly stocked with game which furnished food for cattle during times when there was no forest cover available outside settlements ; but about 1830 French traders began coming overland through Kettle River country upriver to trade furs with local Indian tribes living near these rivers ; about 1840 Father Marquette arrived at Pointes du Hoc opposite present day Green Bay having journeyed down river from Michigan via Superior arriving at Green Bay about late October or early November followed by his Jesuit missionary brothers Pierre Boucher and Jean Nicolet who went northward upriver towards Sturgeon River where they met Father L’Ouverture who took them back upstream along what is now Whitefish Creek thence across Kettle River valley past Amherst where they found fishable water next entering Lac de la Chute below village before reaching PointesduHoc whence they proceeded direct toward Great Lakes shore leaving behind nothing but sandhillsrising gradually above timber line To account for variations 150–200 feet vertically more or less he gave latitude 25 degrees North latitude 5 degrees West longitude thus giving us our present townships system starting with Warrendale southwesterly extending along Racine avenue east wards to Clinton boulevard northeasterly thence watered by Racine creek continuing eastwyndsweeping around curves forming ravines running northeastwesterly into Madison township then turning easterly680 feet joining Madison southeast cornering at Whitefish creek thence westerley southwest cornering just inside former town limits becoming part Of Monrovia Most historians agree that much development did not take place until after white settlers arrived due largely to Native Americans controlling access routes within their own nations territory/ reservations however certain aspects did occur sooner such as land grants given out shortly after European arrival Many schools were established immediately upon settlement allowing children accessto education regardlessof race Some churches also quickly formed providing social services essential for newly arrivals Immigrants brought families with them seeking sanctuary from gangssters etc.. In 1852, the town became a city and its name was changed to Monroe, Wisconsin. The first post office in Monroe opened in 1857. In 1870, the Erie Railroad arrived in town and brought with it new settlers who built businesses and laid out streets. In 1905, Monroe became home to the first full-time high school in the state of Wisconsin. The school District #4 was formed from parts of three other towns that had all become cities: Appleton (1872), Waukesha (1879), and Milwaukee (1887).
