In 1865, John Fenton established the first grocery store in Monroe with six barrels of flour and twelve cases of butter products. In 1897, the first black person to live in Monroe was born when Moses Brown moved into the community from West Allis. In 1944, Reverend Vernon Ladd became the first Pastor of Methodist Church in Monroe after being ordained by Bishop Harry Sinclair at an event held at Clinton Technical High School campus that included Governor Franklin D Roosevelt as well as other dignitaries In 1951, President James K. Polk made his final visit to America while living in nearby Washington D C . He stopped over at Fox Point on his way back from a trip to New York City where he delivered remarks before General Pershing's inauguration ceremony on November 9th On December 2nd, 1951, President James K. Polk's remains were interred next to those of his wife who had died two years earlier during her hospitalization following a stroke suffered while vacationing in Florida On December 8th 1947 Rev Vernon Ladd officiated at dedication ceremonies for new school building which would serve as both home school classrooms for students between grades 5 through 8 as well as adult evening classes offered by Mrs Lloyd French (later Mrs Michael Jessor) who taught second grade through 12th grade until 1949 when she left for college In 1952 (the year after Ira Roach became Superintendent), vocational technical schools were opened up throughout town providing training for assemblers and machinists needed throughout Wisconsin industry including joinery/ woodworking/metal fabrication etc.; these schools continued until 1974 when they were closed due to budget cuts also affecting other public school programs statewide Atwater Middle School which served grades 7-12 continuing into 1975; then it reverted back to grades 5-8 which remain there today

Monroe County was organized on November 3, 1852, as a result of the Wisconsin Territory being divided into two parts, Monroe and Douglas. The county was named for General James Monro who fought in the Mexican-American War.
