The history of shooting target holders in Milwaukee, Wisconsin began with the development of a way to hold targets that was both convenient and reliable. A man named John Bartlett developed a system that allowed shooters to use several different types of targets to hit at the same time. The system was so successful that it became known as the Bartlett System. The Bartlett System was eventually replaced by a simpler method, which is still in use today, called the American Shooting System.
The American Shooting System was first developed in Milwaukee by Edwin Chapman and George Smedley. It consisted of two parts: an armature and a base. The armature held the target, while the base held the shooter. The American Shooting System was eventually replaced by the modern Target Holder system, which is still in use today.

In 1763, Captain John LaFontaine founded Fort Dearborn on Menomonee Bayou south of today's Walker Park neighborhood.
LaFontaine named his new settlement for James DuBois—a slave who had worked for him—after he acquired him at Fort Dearborn.
In 1786, Anthony Wayne founded Detroit on an island in Lake Michigan northeast of today's City Hall area.
In 1836, General Solomon Grundy established Green Bay at the mouth of River10 northwest of where it flows into Rockwool Harbor today. At that time it was known as "the Great Lakes portage".
On May 12th, 1847 – more than two centuries after European exploration began – Henry Dodge established a permanent community at what is now downtown Milwaukee when he moved his family from Battle Creek.
Dodge had served as captain general (and later acting governor) during the Mexican War with its consequent increasein trade through Mexico City."

Milwaukee was founded in 1795 by David Chappel and John J. Sylvester as a fur-trading post on the Milwaukee River. The town quickly became a cultural and commercial center, known for its music, breweries, cheese manufacturing, and other businesses. It grew rapidly during the 1820s and 1830s thanks to its location near the great Lakeshore Canal project and its access to natural resources such as lumber and coal. In 1836, Milwaukee annexed neighboring Racine; this increased its population by about 20 percent. By 1840, the city had reached up to 100,000 people. Milwaukee's growth continued into the 19th century but slowed down around World War I due to problems with water supplies and pollution from industries in downtown. During the 1920s, Milwaukee experienced another growth spurt thanks to federal funding for public works projects such as freeway construction and new housing developments. However, the Great Depression hit Milwaukee hard in 1930-1931 and led to a decline in population that lasted until 1941 when it peaked at over 250,000 people again. After World War II ended, Milwaukee experienced rapid growth as many citizens moved out of the city for jobs in nearby towns or rural areas.
