Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin and home to over 150,000 residents. The city was first mentioned by name in 1638 as a small trading post on the Menomonee River. Milwaukee was founded in 1836 by German immigrants who named it after their city of Hamburg, Germany. The first permanent settler in Milwaukee was Martin Luthers son-in-law, Friedrich Wilhelm Zimmermann. In 1847, the first public school opened in Milwaukee. The city became a separate municipality in 1873 and adopted its present name, Milwaukee, on December 15th of that year. However, progress was made during the 1920s when Professor Harold Oskar Barnard developed an improved eye chart which allowed for more accurate measurements of pupil size and cornea thicknesses without having to light up each chart with a flashlight or lamp. The region that now makes up Milwaukee was inhabited by two main groups: the Menomonee Indians and French colonists known as La Salle's Company. In 1839, when La Salle's Company was dissolved, some men from his company returned to their village on the Wabash River while others continued on to build what would become Walker Hall which stands today at its original location near modern day First Avenue and State Street. By 1840, this community had come to be called New Amsterdam due to English explorer James Clark Kellogg’s visit that year. Walker Hall soon became too small forforts so another settlement was established about three miles upstream on what is now Fox Point Road named Bay View after Governor John Evans Bayley (1802-1867). This new settlement grew quickly thanks to new transportation methods such as canals dug through limestone hillsides and Interstate 94 being built nearby which made goods available closer than ever before to those living in cities like Cleveland or Buffalo across Lake Michigan or beyond even into Canada! Eventually these settlements merged becoming what we know today as Milwaukee! In 1847, Alexander Kinzie founded Kinzie Drug Store at North Washington Street & West Austin Street which remains open today as one of downtown's longest running businesses! In 1849, Julius Caesar Kilgore opened Kilgore Piano Factory on State Street which became one of America’s leading piano manufacturers! By 1870 many different businesses had been established within walking distance of each other making it possible for residents to get work done while they enjoyed their daytime routine! With development continuing apace along with increasing trade opportunities reaching all corners of America via railroads things started looking up for townspeople alike! In 1898 – just four short years later – Walker Park was completed adjacent to downtown providing much needed recreational space for locals and tourists alike! These technologies are changing how we perceive the world around us and will continue to do so through the years ahead.
