Gun magazines in Milwaukee, Wisconsin have a long and storied history. The first gun magazine in Milwaukee was the Arms and Ammunition Store, which opened on December 12, 1831. It was located at the corner of State Street and Monroe Avenue. In 1835, the Arms and Ammunition store became the first shooting gallery in Milwaukee. In 1847, a rifle company was organized by Captain John Smeaton. That year, Captain Smeaton donated land to build a rifle range on North Water Street between Monroe and State Streets. The Rifle Company operated out of this range until it closed in 1865 due to financial difficulties. In 1868, Captain John Smeaton donated another piece of land to the city for use as a park for citizens and their children playing together. This park would become known as Milwaukee Common (now Fuller Park). The first gun show held in this park took place on November 14th of that year. At that show, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show featured performances by local musicians including Abert Jarryn and Edward Hutton. In 1875, Prentice Mulford founded the Mulford Rifle & Pistol Museum which is still active today! The museum is dedicated to preserving Milwaukee’s firearm history with an emphasis on American firearms from pre-Civil War through World War II era firearms collection items! In 1906 – 1907, Mayor John Norwood established Lake Michigan Boulevard as a public walkway linking downtown with Calumet Park just east of State Street! This path would later become part of I-94 corridor! On October 15th of 1908 – ten years after his death – Captain John Smeaton bequeathed his entire pistol collection (valued at over $30 000) to the city of Milwaukee via proxy! On November 11th 1913 – less than two years after he passed away –Milwaukee City Council unanimously voted to rename “John Smeaton Park” in his memory! This park currently occupies much of what was once called “Captain John Smeaton Park”!

In that year, it merged with the Chicago Daily News to form what is now called The Chicago Sun-Times. After World War II, both papers were owned by Raytheon Co., which bought them jointly in 1961.

The city was founded on August 15, 1847, by William Henry Harrison, who was then president of the United States. It was named after George Washington's home town in Virginia. The first people to live in Milwaukee were Native Americans who gathered around a campsite near what is now Waukesha Avenue and Menomonee Creek on August 15, 1847. They were known as the Potawatomi Nation. The first permanent white settler in Milwaukee was John Fitch, who arrived from Englewood, New Jersey on October 13, 1847.[11][12] He built a tannery and business along Wabash Avenue and Second Street.[13][14] By 1860, over 100 white businesses had opened up in downtown Milwaukee,[15][16][17] including 14 breweries,[18] seven banks[19], three insurance companies[20], ten grain mills[21], five shipyards,[22], four clothing stores[23],[24],[25],[26] and two printing presses.[27][28]. In 1865–67 most of these businesses were destroyed by fire when an indoor furnace caught fire at one of the mills; only six buildings out of thirty-eight survived."[29][30]:1 One result of this prosperity was that downtown became known as "the commercial district".[31]:2 In addition to its economic importance during this time period—when new transportation methods made it easier for goods to move throughout America—downtown also saw extensive renovation beginning in the late 19th century which increased energy efficiency and preserved many historic buildings; including brick churches (built between 1830s and 1840s), classical Revival/ neoclassical residences (between 1850s through 1870s), department stores (beginning with Sears & Roebuck in 1893), post office (opened December 12th, 1887), Walker Art Gallery (opened November 3rd 1889), State Fairgrounds (opened 1895) – all while creating new architecture such as Gothic Revival style theaters (First National Theatre opened 1901) – Downtown experienced significant growth from 1890 until World War II due to waves OF immigrants coming to work in various industrial jobs during that time period; later still following WWII with increasing suburban development outside Downtown limits
