Middleton, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. Middleton is located in Dane County on the eastern edge of the Driftless region and is bordered by Walworth County to the east and north, Racine County to the west and south, and Kenosha County to the northwest. The town's name means "village on the river." The first Europeans to visit Middleton were French traders who called it La Chaux-de-Fonds because of a small creek that flowed through it. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette explored this area in 1679 and named it after Emmanuel de la Chaux, marquis de Montcalm, one of France's most successful military commanders during its war with Spain. In 1836, Middleton became part of Dodge City when Dodge City was organized as a township. In 1851, John Foster formed a partnership with David Hershey to open a wagon shop in Middleton. This led to Foster becoming known as "theFather of Ford," for his contributions to American industry. In 1865,Middleton became an incorporated village when Dodge City merged into its boundaries. In 1928, Middleton incorporated as a town; but because its boundaries included rural areas outside of municipal government control which did not become part of the town until 1959 (when they were annexed from Kenosha), Midtown has always been considered an annexe rather than an integral part of townhood like other municipalities within Dane County such as Milwaukee or Waukesha counties which have their own governing bodies outside city limits
