Middleton is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Middleton is part of the Green Bay–Stout–Fox Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Middleton was founded in 1853 by Captain George Prentice and his brother-in-law David Sievers. The first post office was established in Middleton on November 3, 1853. It was named for John Middleton, an early settler who married Prentice's sister. In 1867, the town became a village and then a town in 1903. In 1968, it became a city and has since grown rapidly to its current size with over 2,000 residents. The townsite of Middleton was located along the shores of Lake Michigan and included what is now the downtown core of Middleton as well as most of present day Main Street and portions of West Avenue (northwest corner). The site of today's downtown core had been occupied by several small villages before being selected for development into a town because it had good water access from two large bodies of water - one on each side of the lake - and its location made it easy to get goods to market without having to walk far or go on horseback or wagons. Middleton is home to government buildings and a few businesses including a grocery store, bank, and post office. It also has two churches- one Baptist and one Methodist. The town was founded in 1847 by English settlers who named it after their friend and neighbor, Sir William Middleton. There are many interesting facts about Middleton's history that can be learned from its residents or from visiting its downtown area. One of the most interesting aspects of Middleton's history is the fact that it has been through several transitions over the years: settlement began in 1847 as part of what is now rural Marquette County; during World War II it became an airfield for bombers; since 2000 it has been known as a node for trade between Midwest states. The early pioneers who founded Middleton were farmers who arrived in Canada and came overland via the Great Lakes region on their way toWisconsin territory. In 1847 they named their community after William Middleton, a wealthy British gentleman who had made an fortune trading with Russia across the Siberia river. In 1850 another group of English settlers reached middle ground between Marquette County on the west side of Lake Michigan and Menomonee Falls onthe east side; these men called themselves "The Gentry." By 1860 there were three families living in Middleton- all descendants of those initial colonists- along with sixty acres (24 hectares) grant from Lord Durhambeck whose family had settled near Green Bay some years earlier. During World War II, when America needed military bases close to her allies—especially Germany—Middleton became one such base where American bombers flew out for missions over Europe using landings at Peleliu and Bikini Atolls in which more than 1,000 people died primarily due to lack of food and water supplies during those difficult times. Afterward, as Midwestern towns grew increasingly prosperous thanks to new technological advances such as industrialization, trade increased around Menomonee Falls while development outside Midtown accelerated resulting in high crime rates which until recently kept locals largely hidden from view even by those living nearby; today this exposure may have contributed to recent changes seen within Midtown itself with growing gentrification rates among older residents while younger professionals continue to move into newer areas such as North Park Shopspace adjacent to State Street just off I-494 exit 36A).
