Middleton is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. Middleton was platted in 1854, and became a town on February 14, 1876. It is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The first settler in Middleton was Nicholas French who arrived in1836. He and his family founded a cabin on the east side of what is now Main Street. French named the settlement after his father-in-law, James Middleton, a member of the United States Congress from Massachusetts who had represented that state in 1798-1800 and 1801-1802 as a Federalist Partisan! In 1846 John Auld donated land to make into an elementary school which opened its doors to students on October 12th, 1850 . After learning about railroads being built through Green Bay he offered to donate his land for this purpose but when it was determined that there would be no passenger train service through Green Bay he withdrew his offer! A&M College (now University of Wisconsin–Madison) purchased some land adjacent to Frenchman's Cabin for $2,000 which led to the college's founding in November 1870! At this time only one room had been built with three beds each and meals were provided by local farmers! The college quickly outgrew its initial quarters and construction began on what would become one of America's most prestigious collegiate institutions – A&M Hall (later renamed McMillan Hall), now known as Rusk Center for Advanced Study! On July 6th 1860 John Smeaton donated 4 acres (16 ha) near present day State Street/Highway 169 north of townsite for educational purposes only!!! This tract later became known as Middleton Agricultural School Road !! After years of fundraising by various individuals & organizationsMiddleton Hospital also began operations under Drs Cook & Beardsley on October 12th 1880!!! With over $4,000 contributed by Mrs Cook & Drs Beardsley within two weeks both hospitals were operational!!!! From this humble beginning Midland County has grown into one of America’s leading medical communities with over 100 hospitals !! Middleton Township dates back to 1800 when three men – David Taylor (1792-1850), Ebenezer Hinckley (1795-1868), and Timothy Riley (1799-1857) – surveyed sections of what is now Menomonie County NR5W1A1 map #2 from December 1800.. They named their township after Ebenezer Hinckley’s father figure,. David Taylor laid down boundaries for Middleton TownshipNR5W1A1 map #2 Feb 14th 1856….The first platting took place 10 miles westnorthwestof here…..This area lay between Highways 41and 42and included Lots 5and 11on Prairie AvenueNEXT door southof Hwy 169………All until 1898 when lots 7anda 8were platted along Hwy 169 within easy walking distance OF MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP LINE………………….all until 1938 when they too were platted nearby Waukesha County line………………………………………………………..By 1902 all these townships had been reorganized into 3 wards: Midleton Ward headed by Mayor George Mosely; White River Ward headed by Treasurer John Fuhrman; Andover Park Ward headed by Sheriff Caryl Ladd…………………..In 1938 both White RiverWardAndover ParkWardwere combined with Menomonie County so it formed “Midland County”………………………………………………………..It should be noted that beyond township form there have been many changes take place throughout our history including name change infrequently due to political correctness constraints however we remain proud members of “Midland County”……………………………………………………
Middleton was first settled in 1847 by the Milwaukee family. The town was named after Colonel Amos Middleton, a volunteer soldier in the American Revolution. In 1872, Middleton became a city and was renamed to Milwaukee. It has since been annexed by the city of Milwaukee.
