Middleton, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the Driftless region of the Great Lakes region. Middleton was first settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1836. The town was chartered on March 12, 1856, and named for Major General Moses Middleton (1784-1855), an American Revolutionary War general and member of the United States Congress from Ohio. The townsite at present-day Middleton was surveyed in 1857 by George Stephenson and it became a village on December 16, 1857. Middleton's early industry included wagon making and blacksmithing; however, after gold discoveries were made at Green Bay in 1859 and nearby Menomonee Falls in 1861, production of goods related to those mines increased rapidly. By 1865, Middleton had become one of the largest gold mining communities on the Great Lakes region due to its location near several important veins of ore including Pinkerton Gold Mines #1 (now part of Brown County), Menomonee Gold Mines #2 (now part of Racine County), and Milwaukeeville Mine #3 (now part of Milwaukee). In 1870–71, local businessmen organized what is nowthe Midwestern League which promoted horse racing as a major business activity in order to finance construction projects such as new roads and bridges needed for larger towns to reach out into rural areas. That same year saw another important event when Middleton's first school opened with instructionbeginning September 8th under Superintendent Samuel Atherbury; that building still stands today as part of the downtown core. In late 1870s through 1860s many professional men from Chicago immigrated to America looking for opportunities to make their fortune during this period known as "The Gilded Age". Some key players during this time include James Fenton who founded Fenton Brewery & Publisher Company; John Dutton who established Milwaukee Insurance Company; Cornelius Vanderbilt whose shipping interests extended into both land purchases/developments along Lake Michigan shorelines as well as opening up additional waterside trading ports around Michigan City thereby becoming one of America’s most significant maritime interests; Andrew Carnegie who began his steelmaking career with his family’s bankruptcies since he could not find any investors willing to invest capital into his ventures until he finally found backing from J P Morgan Jr.; Samuel Morse who laid down copper wire throughout much Northeastern United States before starting his own line westward across Canada to San Francisco whereupon selling rights back Eastward against future crop failures etc.; these men were just a few among many others during this era that created millions upon millions dollars value within our society yet remain largely unacknowledged or even remembered today outside specific circles or families Many thanks must go out especiallyto my forbears Abraham Lincoln What followed during this time were two main waves(of) settlement totaling over 25% growth rate occurred mainly due between 1880-1920 alone bringing about untold numbers more people checkinginto town seeking opportunity&immigration relief while also creating numerous businesses such as dry goods store builder Wm Hennepin Trust Co., grocery store founder John Jacob Astor etc... middleTON essentially became “A New Town” sprung forth almost overnight following decades long process whereby entire rural/remote area gradually became transformed into dense urban center due primarily(but not exclusively)to influxes OF fresh blood while traditional values& beliefs slowly vanished or were greatly modifiedHomespun culture & Southern Wisconsin way life gradually came alive againalbeit within highly regulated framework increasingly influenced by large metropolitan areas
