The first white person to live in Middleton was James A. Bennett in 1849. Middleton was founded by John Bendix and his family in 1855 as a small farming community on the southwest shore of Lake Michigan. When the Minnesota Central Railroad arrived in 1857, it connected Middleton with Chicago and other northeastern cities via two long branches: the Big Rapids Branch (now known as the Milwaukee Road) and the Whitefish Branch (now known as I-94). These north-south routes facilitated trade between these rural communities and large urban areas to the south, east, and west. The early residents of Middleton were farmers who raised corn, wheat, potatoes, milk cows, horses and hogs; they also operated a small bakery which produced bread for local merchants and city dwellers alike. After World War II many of these same families moved to larger towns along I- 94 or south into Green County where they continued their agriculture but now also developed businesses such as sporting goods stores or convenience stores. In 1955 when George Wirth became mayor of Milwaukee he started an effort to keep track of allIED municipalities within Wisconsin so that Middleton could maintain its position as one ofWI's "jurisdictions without boundaries". This led to development of a municipal government within Middleton that still exists today with mayorinc approval being necessary for most activities not listed above including zoning changes etc.. In recent years there has been an increase in tourism due largely to both its history (the downtown core is filled with old brick buildings from various periods) as well as its location close to several major highways including I-94/US 6/I-280/WI 22 which give it easy access both into neighboring states and out into Lake Michigan
