Middleton was first settled in 1847 and named for John Middleton, an early settler. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2 km²), all land. Middleton was platted in 1847 by James Waddell and others as part of a larger tract that would become Ozaukee County. The town name comes from John Middleton, who bought one-half of the plat from Isaac Griggs in 1848. settlers near Middleton built log cabins which still stand today on Center Street and Cedar Avenue. In 1860, when Ozaukee County was created, Middleton became its seat and remained so until it merged with Waukesha into Waukesha County in 1924. In 1900, George Henson established a grocery store at 107th and West Washington Streets in what is now downtown Middleton because he could not find anythingelse close to his home on Cedar Avenue between State Road 12 and State Road 14. This store remains open today as Henson's Grocery & Drug Store, also known as GHD&D or simply GHSD(). GHD&D originally served as both a general store and grocery business; however, due to increased competition from other businesses over time it eventually closed its doors for good in 1984 after nearly 40 years of operation The last person to open GHD&D was Donny Ziegler who started working there on October 15th 1988 after more than 10 years of service
