Mequon is a town in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Mequon were the Potawatomi and Menomonee Indians. They arrived in 1838 from Michigans village of Racine. The town was named for John Mequon, an early settler. In 1854, James Waugh established a grocery store and post office in Mequon. A sawmill was built in 1865 and operated until it closed in 1928. The mill left behind a large forest that still exists today. In 1870, John Hirschmann opened a lumberyard on the east side of town. By 1876, his business had become one of the largest lumberyards in Wisconsin. Hirschmann died in 1901 but his son continued to operate it until 1907 when it became part of the American Lumber Company empire controlled by Jens Jensen. On October 15, 1907, Henry Ford established his first car dealership at 116th and Water Streets near what is now Muhammad Ali Boulevard.. On November 3rd 1902 he married Eleanor Moynihan at their home on 122nd Street just south of present day School Avenue (now University Parkway). Mequon is located in the town of Hudson, Wisconsin on the east side of the Fox River. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Mequon were French traders and fur-runners from Quebec in 1636. The area was part of the Winnebago Confederacy until 1854. The first settler in Mequon was John Dennison, who arrived in 1785. He named his ranch after Captain John Meek, a British naval officer who had explored and mapped the upper Fox River region. Dennison operated a ferry across the river for transportation between his ranch and Hudson. In 1834, Hiram Morse purchased land adjacent to Dennison's ranch and started growing corn on his property. By 1840, he had built a store, tavern, and home at what is now known as Morse Place. In 1847, he married born Mary Thorndike (1795-1872). They raised six children: Hiram Jr., William H., Salmon P., Mary F., Franklin J., and Clara L.. AfterMary Morse died in 1872, Hiram Sr.'s son Hiram J. Morse took over operations of the store and tavern while also caring for his seven grandchildren. Hiram Morse passed away in 1907 but left behind an legacy that continues to this day; he donated land for a high school which opened in 1919 when Mequon High School became part of Hudson County Technical College (now DePauw University). In 1927-28, Mr. Morse also funded construction of an addition to the school which includes a gymnasium/auditorium/gallery/dome used today as classrooms and offices.
