The first settler in Mequon was Gottlieb Weigel who arrived in 1848. The first post office in Mequon was established on October 24, 1857. It was called Weisebrod and opened on December 3, 1857. The town was incorporated as a village on February 14, 1909. On January 1, 1913, it became a town once again. In 1957-1959 the city of Milwaukee removed all its citizens to form what is now Mequon because of budget cuts by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Beal (). Mequon has been home to many famous people including Governor William Milliken (1901-1966), General Electric's Jack Welch (1958-2005), American singer Loretta Lynn (born Loretta Lynn Heitkamp), actor Mel Blanc (1920-2003), and comedian Dick Cavett (1922-2008). Many businesses have been founded or continue operations in Mequon including Peet's Coffee Company (), KFC (), Sears (), Verizon Wireless (), JCPenney () and Dillards (). There are also several colleges located within easy driving distance of Mequon such as Hamline University (), UW–Milwaukee () and Marquette University (). In 1915 Drury College moved from Hudson to create a new campus south of the old millrace near present day Cedarhurst Road (). After five years of planning and construction costs totaling $1 million dollars ($ when measured against current economic conditions) the college’s new building opened in 1917 with an enrollment of 350 students (). Today over two thousand students attend Drury College are studying business administration/commerce/liberal arts/science/engineering/health sciences etc., making it one of the largest private undergraduate colleges east of Chicago with campuses throughout Wisconsin
