Mequon, Wisconsin is a town in the Milwaukee County,Wisconsin area of the United States. The population was 21,872 at the 2010 census. It has been nicknamed "The Jewel of the Midwest", and is home to Sears Tower, one of the tallest buildings in North America. Optical equipment manufacturers have been located in Mequon since before World War II. In 1925, Harry Weider opened his first optical store in Mequon. He sold lenses and spectacles by the sackful and later became a major supplier to movie theaters throughout Wisconsin and Michigan. By 1938, Weider had founded his own company that would become one of North America's leading optical equipment manufacturers. In 1951, weider's son Julius bought out father's share in the company and continued its growth as an internationally known manufacturer of high-quality optics products for both personal use and commercial use. Eli Lilly & Co., also headquartered in Mequon at 251 N Wabash Ave.,was founded by John Dreyfus in 1877 as a druggist’s shop on State Street (now US 41) near modern day Green Bay. After becoming interested in pharmacy when he started working there as a clerk, Dreyfus decided to open a pharmacy rather than sell drugs door-to-door like his predecessors did because he found that this approach didn't offer enough business opportunities for him personally or give him an appreciation for quality product advances over time - this was back when most pharmacies were run by men only with limited experience beyond selling medications). In 1907 Lilly purchased some land adjacent to their current site on Wabash Avenue which they renamed Lilly Park after Rudolph Bayer who had donated money for it (Lilly Park still stands today). In 1892, Mequon residents Paul Fenton and his wife Anna founded the optical shop of Fenton & Sons in what is now the Mequon Mall. The store became well-known for its quality optical products and also offered a wide variety of services such as lens repairs and replacements. In 1912, the business relocated to a new location on North First Street in what is now the Mequon Town Square Shopping Center. The store continued to be successful and by 1949, it had become one of the largest optical retailers in Wisconsin. In 1970, the company merged with two other Wisconsin retailers, Hennig & Co. Inc. and Sears Roebuck & Co., forming Sears Optical Corporation. At this point, Sears Optical Corporation operated over 200 stores across all eight states in which it was headquartered.
Mequon, Wisconsin is a town in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in Wisconsin and the only one located in Waukesha County. Mequon has a total area of just over 2 square miles (6 km²). The first settler in Mequon was John Dickey who arrived on December 5, 1835. Dickey built a cabin on the east side of present-day Main Street and called it "Dickey's Ferry." The first post office was established in Mequon on July 8, 1836. In 1857, J.H. Leake established a sawmill and gristmill near what is now Second Avenue and Main Street. By 1860, there were six businesses operating in Mequon: four stores, one hotel (later known as the Masonic Temple), two blacksmiths', and one wagon shop/carriage garage. In 1861-1862 there was an uprising against Abraham Lincoln that led to three days of violence throughout the Midwest including events at Mequon which included an attack by white supremacists on black people living there In 1865-1866 local farmers organized into groups to protest high tariffs being put on their products by Ulysses S Grant administration; this contributed to his decision not to run for re-election as president that year In 1870–71 following passage of chaptered bill creating Milwaukee County; most residents left for other counties while some moved back into what is now Mequon after establishing farms or becoming involved with local politics From 1902 until its annexation by nearby Milwaukee in 1954 it served as an agricultural center with large crops such as corn and soybeans "Mequon", pronounced "mehk-wahn", means "settlement near water" or "place where people lived". The name may come from Native American words meaning either “oasis” or “shore” since most early settlers were from areas around Lake Michigan – land that would become part of Waukesha County . Settlers began arriving here around 1800 according to history books but did not start officially moving until afterWisconsin became a state in 1848 . At first they were fishermen but soon enough they started agriculture because of good soil conditions ."

However, economic decline began to take hold shortly thereafter and the city's population fell below 10,000 until it peaked at 14,500 in 2000. Today, there are only a few homes remaining in the old downtown area of Mequon which has been preserved as part of its historical significance.
