The Mequon, Wisconsin area was first settled in 1848 by John F. MacArthur and his wife, Nellie. They built a log cabins on the site of present-day Mequon High School. The town was named after an Indian word meaning "big stream." In 1853, the town had a population of 50 people and was named Racine because of the racines (a type of cereal) that were grown in the area. The first school in Mequon was built in 1857 and it served as a side-street school for 3 years before being moved to its current location. In 1870, there were only 10 people living in Mequon and it was renamed Racine again. In 1902, the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) constructed their first line through Racine and Mequon became one of its original towns within AT&T's territory. By 1915, however, due to World War I, Racine had dwindled to just 10 people and it reverted back to its former name until 1925 when it again gained an official name - Mequon - when telephone directories began using that spelling.
Mequon is a small town in southern Wisconsin. The population was 7,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The town was settled in 1836 by German immigrants, and it became a United States municipality on January 1, 1847. Mequon's name comes from Mirabell (mimic) creek which empties into Menominee River in the town center. The first post office was established in 1837, and the first store was opened in 1840. The menominee river served as a water supply for much of the early development of Mequon because there were no other sources nearby. In 1851, Mequon began to build its own schoolhouse which still stands today on Main Street. In 1860, Mequon also built its first railroad station which remains extant today as a museum open to the public. The now defunct Menominee County Agricultural Society operated a flour mill in Mequon beginning in 1865 until it closedowns in 1916 due to overproduction costs associated with World War I. The present day Mequon Elementary School building was completed in 1951 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire prior to its construction
