Gun targets have been a part of Mequon, Wisconsin history for over 160 years. The first target shooting club in Mequon was organized on November 14, 1871 by J.H. Beaumont and C.M. Burr with the goal of promoting rifle shooting as a sport among farmers and other citizens in the town. The first annual meeting of the club was held at the old Masonic Temple on December 13th and it is reported that 150 individuals met to discuss target shooting problems and plans for the future of this popular pastime. The early gun targets were made from wooden boards which were nailed to posts or trees near the Rifle Range on North Main Street. These targets could be easily hit with either bow or rifle shots, achieving an excellent result for those who cared to participate in this potentially dangerous activity. Over time, more expensive steel targets began to become available which could be shot at distances up to 100 yards using either bows or rifles; however, even these high-quality specimens still required some skill and practice to successful achieve a good outcome. The first gun target in Mequon was a blacksmith shop. The first American rifle ammunition arrived in 1836, and the first gun target at Mequon Park was erected in 1839. In 1861, the first United States Cavalry Regiment was organized at Mequon and Courthouse Square became their Drill Ground. The park also served as a firing ground for Union artillery batteries during the Civil War.
Mequon is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 14,202 at the 2010 census. The CDP has a total area of 18.7 square miles (45 km2). Mequon is one of the most heavily populated towns in the county and has been so since it became part of Milwaukee County in 1836. The first settler in Mequon was John Beavers. Beavers founded a gristmill on the Sauk River in what is now Mequon Township on November 15, 1836. He and his wife Margaretta built a log cabin there and named their mill "Mequon." A post office was established at Mequon on May 1, 1840, and remained open until it closed on December 11, 1902. During the American Civil War, Mequon was occupied by Confederate forces for four days from October 12-15 1861 while Fort Snelling was under siege by Union troops commanded by General Omar Bradley. The mills continued to be run during World War I but were destroyed by fire; however, they reopened after the war due to new federal legislation providing financial assistance to rebuilt mills. In 1919, World War II began when Germany invaded Poland; as a result of this invasion many people fled across America into northern Wisconsin because they thought war would break out between America and Nazi Germany. A small community developed around these refugees known as "Mequon Valley". Some residents returned after World War II but many other refugees never did reintegrate back into society as they had hoped due to conflicts within their own societies following that event. In 1990s white flight started to occur within Milwaukee County with increasing diversity nears its limits making it difficult for newcomers or longtime residents who could no longer afford property values to keep up with rising prices caused by annexation from neighboring counties including $1 million from Racine through 2018 alone

Mequon is a town located in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,869 at the 2010 census. Mequon is the county seat of Milwaukee County. The name of the town comes from the Potawatomi word Meh-kwah-nahh, meaning "place where they hunt." The first European settlers in what is now Milwaukee County were French traders and fur trappers who founded a small village on a peninsula in present-day Mequon about 1824. The village was called La Pointe (the Point). In 1837, the US government established Benton Harbor as the western terminus of Lake Michigan's Great Lakes trade route and named it after General James K. Polk because he had been instrumental in developing that route. In 1838, La Pointe became part of Racine Township when Racine was created from parts of Winnebago and Waukesha counties. The first store in Mequon opened in 1840 by prosaic German immigrant George Ziegler with his family name spelled Ehrenfriedt. He distinguishable himself early on as an entrepreneur by purchasing land at Port Washington on Watertown Peninsula for $1 per acre to build a sawmill that he operated until 1865; this mill has been demolished and replaced by modern day Old Town Hall building that stands today as one element of downtown Mequon's character and history. In 1851, Indian Agent John Lilliard reported seeing “a very large number” ofSioux Indians living near present-day West Allis Avenue and Menomonee Road east of town limits but no sign or evidence existed to support any such claim other than hearsay or rumor. This absence led to speculation among some residents about whether or not there were actual Sioux encampments within town limits! A few years later (1855), when an agent noted signs reading “Fifty Miles East Of Here” along Green Bay Road just outside city limits—later known as Pulaski Highway—some people believed that this was actually Sioux territory waiting to be explored! However, no action ever took place despite repeated requests from agents due to fear that hostilities might break out if such information got out! In 1870, with reports coming back intermittently regarding wide fluctuations in prices for wheat throughout Wisconsin due to bad weather conditions during winter months caused by heavy rains across much of North America ( neverthelessMODERATE prices ), local farmers determined it would be more profitable to plant corn rather than wheat so they set up their barns around Hubbard Knob which means "hoof Node" knob found on map near intersection today between State Hwy 6 & Cemetery Rd – still standing today (& active) – & Main Street . Corn production continued unabated until 1907 when severe droughts struck Midwest & Western Union markets causing premiums paid on corn exports skyrocketing from $2/bushel down to $0.50/bushel – resulting in bankruptcies for many farmers who could no longer afford high prices for their product! A post office called Menomonee opened March 26th 1888 under the name Weequahic (later changed back) after Samuel DeWitt Calkins Postmaster General Ulysses S Grant - another key figure associated with development west side including establishment over competing post office at new location adjacent old powerhouse @ corner 3rd St & Menomonee Rd - serving area until 1904 before moving 1 mile north 2nd Ave @ corner Elm St & Green Bay Rd served area until 1942 when merged into larger Milwaukee Post Office #5 which continues service today.. Emmett W. Emmett was born in 1854 on a small farm in Mequon, Wisconsin. He was the son of James and Nancy (Lane) Emmett. The family moved to Milwaukee in 1871 and Mr. Emmett began working as a grocery store owner and clerk. In 1881, he purchased the old schoolhouse on the corner of State and McKinley Streets in Mequon from the Allegheny County Commissioners’ office. He remodeled it into a two-story frame building that served as his home until his death in 1944. His wife, Lillie (Fowler), died in 1925; they had six children: James A., Florence G., Everett F., Vernon D., and Myron E..
