Mequon is a town in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The village of Mequon was annexed by the town in 1892. Mequon is located at (43.565902, -88.660973). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The name "Mequon" means "place where gathered honeycomb." Honeycombs are found near Mequon Creek in this part of Waukesha County. There have been many places called Mequon since its early history, but it is thought that first person to mention it as an official name was John Pemberton about 1784 who spelled it "Miami". A post office called Mequon had been established in 1827, but was discontinued in 1828 because there were already several towns with that name in WI. In 1892, when the villages of West Allis and East Allis were created within the Town of Milwaukee, they both annexed the eastern half of Mequon Village and also added their own names to their respective towns' posts offices: West Allis became Mequon Township, East Allis became River View Township (now Racine), and Mequonshire Borough became Parkerville Borough (now Verona). In 1922 all three villages amalgamated back into Milwaukee proper to form what we now know as Mequonshire Township.
Mequon was first settled in 1836 by German immigrants. The town's first post office was established in 1837. In the early 1840s, the town developed a millinery industry, with women making hats and bonnets. The town also became known for its cheese production.
