It lost its status as a township in 1924 and became an unincorporated community until it merged with nearby White Settlement in 1984. The two towns shared one post office until 1987 when they switched to their own ZIP codes. The population of Mequon peaked at 12,878 at the 2000 census but has since declined significantly; its current population is 9,613 according to the 2010 Census

Mequon is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The name means "place where the Mequon and Two Rivers rivers meet." The first settlers in what is now Mequon were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1793. They named their new village after Pierre-André LaFontaine, Sieur de la Salle, who had explored the area for France in 1694. The French Canadian government granted them a land grant on November 8, 1836. In 1847, local farmers founded the Town of Mequon to house their workers on land they had acquired from John Brodhead and his brother Isaac Brodhead Jr.. In 1851, residents voted to rename the town to honor General David Dixon (1775-1821), hero of the Battle of Yorktown during the American Revolution. Mequon was incorporated as a city in 1886. On July 1, 1907 it became part of Racine County when that county was created from portions of Milwaukee County. On October 1, 1961 it became a part of Racine County again when that county was merged into Milwaukee County
Mequon is a town in Brown County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. The name is from the Ojibwe word "mequon" meaning "big body of water." The first permanent settlers in Mequon were John and Catherine Copley who arrived in 1836. They were the first white settlers to arrive in what is now Brown County. The town was platted on December 3, 1838 by Acting Mayor James Grafton and selectmen Elisha Goodrich and Solomon Pratt. Mequon quickly became a center for trade because it had access to the Menomonee River. Mequon's initial growth was due to its location near theMenomonee River which made it easy for traders to bring goods into the area. In addition, Mequon had a large mill that produced flour and other products for local markets. By 1840, Mequon had become an important commercial hub with several stores and businesses located around downtown. Despite its growing importance, Mequon experienced some decline during the early years of its existence. For example, in 1850, only one store remained in downtown after many others closed due to competition from larger towns such as Milwaukee or Waukesha. However, thanks to improved transportation infrastructure and marketing abilities by merchants such as John Hirschfeldt and George Fenton (the founder of J Hirschfeldt cigars), Mequon began experiencing resurgence during the late 1800s through dramatic growth rates that reached new heights by 1906 when it registered a population of 3,822 residents! This success led toMequons incorporation as a city on October 15th 1907 with a population of 10,000 citizens! During World War II much effort went into developing munitions production within town limits which caused significanteconomic impact on locals over wartime period alone-nearly doubling average household income! After 1945 abandoned mills along Menomonee River waterfront declined rapidly leaving less employment opportunities for men until recent redevelopment has revived these mills providing good paying jobs today
