In 1907 the post office was renamed for General Frederick W. Sherman who had served as Ulysses S. Grant’s Chief-of-Staff during his term as President of the United States (1889-93). Mequon is a town in Mequon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,873 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from French meaning "pumpkin patch." The first settlers in what is now Mequon were those who came to this area during the Boundaries Survey of Wisconsin in 1839. They were led by Captain John McLaughlin and his party and named their new settlement after Major General James Meeker's Indian fort on the Maumee River. It wasn't until 1847 that Lawton, a small community located about northeast of Mequon, was granted township status and became part of Mequon Township. In 1858, Illinoisan John Witherspoon bought land west of present-day Mequon and began to build a home there. He called it Park View because he saw a park near Prairie du Chien where people played games while looking out over the river. By 1865, Witherspoon had built two more homes and renamed them Park Place and Deerfield Manor after his friends in Illinois whom he hoped would help him finance their construction. One hundred years later, Deerfield Manor still stands as one of Park Place's most prominent buildings. In 1916, when America entered World War I and many businesses closed down due to lack of supplies or rationing restrictions, Mequon's Post Office opened its doors again after being closed for many years due to prohibitionism. Mequon won fame when it was featured prominently in Neil Simon's play "The Odd Couple". The townsfolk set up an outdoor theater within minutes of learning about the show's location from general manager Bob Steele. When tickets went on sale for that performance on October 15th (the day before Thanksgiving), sales reached $1 per ticket which made it one of only three theatres open that day across America! On July 1, 1871, the Town of Mequon was organized. It was located in the present-day village of Mequon and was part of the Town of Milwaukee. The town had a population of about 950 people at its incorporation. The first school in Mequon was built on a farmstead near the intersection of State Road 3 and First Street in 1875. In 1885, the town built a new school on State Road 31, which became known as "Old High School". The old high school building still stands and is used as a museum today. In 1907, Mequon decided to annex the Village of West Allis. West Allis had a population of about 4500 people at its incorporation date. With this annexation, Mequon became an entire municipality with a total number of residents over 11000.
