Mequon is a small town in the middle of Wisconsin, located about 20 miles south of Green Bay. The population was 1,832 at the 2000 census. Mequon is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Mequon were Germans who had come overland from Germany in 1837. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Fox River and named it "Mequon." The first post office was established in 1841. A store and hotel were built in 1851 and 1860 respectively, but they closed down after several years because of economic hardship. In 1865, James Wertheimer bought land around what is now Mequon and started to build a schooner harbor called "Wertheim Harbor." This harbor allowed him to export goods from his farmstead to other towns in Wisconsin. Wertheimer also developed an industry that produced cheese products called Henschel & Company (later renamed Henschel). The first milk tanker service arrived in Mequon in 1921 with the arrival of the MV Milwaukee-Milwaukeeliner which transported milk between Milwaukee and Racine, WI daily. In 1925, he donated land for a high school which became known as Mequon High School. Today there are several businesses that operate within Mequons borders; including two hospitals (one operated by SHRM-Wisconsin Valley Health System) as well as three state parks: Lumberton Hills Park (a 972 acre park), Mount Pleasant Park (a 546 acre park) and Menomonee Falls State Park (an 805acre park). In recent years Mequons economy has been Struggling due to many factors such as high taxes, low job growth, tight budgets for education and infrastructure projects statewide As a result of this struggle many residents have left their community for greener pastures across the state or outside of Wisconsin altogether

The first settler was Captain John Nevin, who arrived with his family on July 1, 1824. By 1830, Mequon had a population of around eighty people. Over time, Mequon grew rapidly due to its natural resources such as lumber and coal. In 1853, Mequon became a village and suffered from financial difficulties caused by increases in rail traffic through the area. However, over time the village regained its stability and growth. In 1865, Mequon was incorporated as a city under the name Milwaukee after becoming an important center for trade in the region. Over time, both Milwaukee and Mequon experienced significant growth and development; however, Milwaukee ultimately surpassed Mequon as Milwaukee’s largest city during its early years. In 1972, following passage of the National Education Amendments (PepsiCo v Board), which granted students free lunch in all public schools within Great Lakes states,[1] Meqvon began experiencing economic decline as other towns within Wisconsin increased their prices for groceries compared to their smaller neighbor. This trend continued until 1984 when state budget cuts led to an increase in grocery prices across all municipalities within Wisconsin; this coincided with falling industrial production throughout much of North America due to technological advances.[2] Despite these challenges,[3] during 1984–2012[4],Meqvon saw modest but steady progress including limited joblessness rates[5], increasing employment opportunities thanks to efforts by local businesses,[6][7][8][9][10] increase in private wealth[11], improvement in quality of life[12], launching new initiatives such as Green Acres Park[13],[14],[15]), numerous community events (e.g., ArtWalk)[16]), multiple expansions into neighboring towns (e.g., Menomonee Falls)[17],[18]; total population reached 741 residents by 2016.[19] These successes are owed primarily to strong leadership from Mayor Tom Barrett who has been mayor since 2014 and has overseen an aggressive revitalization campaign focused on attracting high-quality jobs that support local businesses while preserving assets such as Green Acres Park
