Mequon, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and is the county seat of Polk County. The population was 12,553 at the 2010 census, making it the second-most populous municipality in Polk County after Milwaukee. The city is located on the Fox River in Ozaukee County. Mequon was founded by Germans in 1853 as Metzgonenhausen Settlement on land that had been donated to them by John Adams Wright. It became a town in 1858 and was named for General George Mequon, who had commanded American forces during the War of 1812. The first post office opened in Metzgonenhausen on October 16, 1858, and remained open until it was discontinued on May 1, 1903. The area now known as Mequon was settled by English colonists from England around 1765 and called Walworth Township (now Winnebago County). In 1830, part of Racine County became attached to Walker Territory forming Racine District No. 2; however, this district never received full recognition until 1860 when Racine District No. 3 was created out of portions of two other districts - Racine District No. 1 (northwest corner) and Racine District No. 2 (southwest corner). On July 5, 1863 – due to land claimed by Milwaukee – Racine District No., No:4 was established as a final result of these divisions with boundaries including most of what is now Mequon Township along with an eastern sector including parts of Oak Creek Township which would later become part of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's wards 8-10 through his election victory over incumbent David Ziegler in November 2013: In 1870–71 there were only 10 residents living within sight or reach of the new town center due to lack of transportation options; however soon enough cars arrived providing much needed access for businesses and citizens alike In 1890–91 they reached 100 residents when electric lights began flowing through town streets By 1910 there were more than 300 residents within easy driving distance thanks to improved roads and railroads

Mequon, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is the twelfth-largest municipality in Douglas County and the largest community by population in Mequon Township. Mequon was established in 1852 as a small town on the east bank of the Menominee River. The name means “meadow” or “plain” in German and means "place of meeting" or "settlement." In 1862, Mequon became a village. On July 16, 1888, Mequon became a city after being annexed by Milwaukee. The first mayor of Mequon City was John Hutton. The menominee river flood of 1936 destroyed most of buildings within city limits but also left evidence of what had once been an impressive irrigation system for corn and other crops which still remains to this day; it is one of only two large man-made features remaining from that era in northwestern Wisconsin (). Mequon's location on the east bank of the Menominee River made it an ideal site for manufacturing during periods when railroads were built through that area; this included such companies as Jardine & Harrison (later merged with American Can), McCormick & Co., Singer Sewing Machine Company, Wabash Railroad ( later abandoned ), and several others whose products were distributed throughout northwest WI until discontinued many years ago. The Stroud Glass Works located here produced some very high quality window glass during World War I while other plants closed due to wartime production restrictions. After World War II ended most Stroud Glass Works operations stopped because there was no demand for high quality window glass following hostilities ended; however a few workers continued working at plant until its closure in 1969 when all employment at plant ceased because importation began to plummet due to rising commodity prices
Mequon was founded in 1853 by Danish immigrants, who named their community after the fur-bearing creature Mequon Bear. The town became a center for agricultural production and served as a bedroom community for Milwaukee. In the 1940s, Mequon's economy shifted to manufacturing and its population grew to over 10,000 residents. The town experienced heavy military activity during World War II and post-war growth led to declines in population and economic vitality. Today, Mequon is a small but vibrant community with cultural attractions and active businesses.
