Mequon is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 26,829 at the 2010 census. The name is from German Mecker and Anguish meaning "place of the meadow". It was platted on November 1, 1836. The first settlers were Germans who arrived in 1834. They started a small farm and soon built a gristmill and other businesses. The town was named after John Meeker (1792-1854), an early settler who bought land here in 1838. A post office called Mequon opened in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1905. Mequon's growth came when the railroad came to town in 1857. Businesses grew quickly because of the new transportation opportunities this brought. Many homes were built during this time, including one known as "The White House" which still stands today. By 1860, Mequon had over 100 residents and two schools; one for whites only and one for coloreds/mixed race students. During World War I, Mequon aided in creating munitions plants near Waukesha and Racine while also serving as military headquarters for the town during various engagements around the area such as Battle of Bad Axe Creek on October 15th 1916 or Gettysburg on July 4th 1863. In 1925, Rolland Ditka became superintendent of school services for Milwaukee County - moving from Racine where he had been superintendent since 1903. Ditka left to become head football coach at Notre Dame University before his death on February 24th 1984. In 1937-1938 local artist Harry Heineman drew murals with scenes from life at Mequon High School “Harry Heineman’s murals: Memories of My Youth”. After Heineman’s death many more pieces were added over time culminating with an outdoor exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum on May 5-9th 2009 entitled “Harry Heineman & His Murals: Over 50 years – A retrospective”.
In 1957–1959 Inspector General Haldeman ordered all schools throughout Wis., except those operated by State authorities be closed due to teachers' unions being uncooperative with federal education programs bringing about 'the Great American Schools Strike'. With no choice but to close all public schools across America due to teacher walkouts that week over pay grievances,[4] Superintendent Rolland Ditka directed Superintendent Harry Heineman to paint murals inside every high school classroom depicting humorous stories about everyday activities between students & staff which then served as teaching tools! "Harry Heineman's murals: Memories of My Youth"The first BB guns were designed by George Ball in 1892. Ball's design was a shotgun style BB gun that fired small, round BBs. These guns were used for target practice and were not very successful. However, the popularity of these guns led to the development of more successful firearms, such as the Ruger 10/22 rifle and shotguns. Mequon is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,501 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Milwaukee County and the largest town in the county. Mequon was platted on November 12, 1836 by John K. Taylor and Ebenezer Richardson as part of a land grant to David Ransom from the Government of Indiana. It was named for Elijah Mecom, an early settler and real estate agent who had come to America in 1824 with his family. Mequon's first school opened in 1840. The first post office was established in 1845. The communitys name originated with an American Indian word meaning "the place where two rivers meet." In 1860, Mequon became part of the city of Milwaukee. At that time it had a population of only 1,500 people. The economic development of Mequon has been based upon its location as a key transportation hub for southeastern Wisconsin and central Minnesota during both World War II and postwar years; its position as a center for agriculture during this time; and its status as one of the leading manufacturing centers within miles reach of downtown Milwaukee during this period. These days Mequon’s economy relies heavily upon health care services (a major employer), retail trade (particularly auto parts dealerships), government employers (including those responsible for providing social services such as food stamps), professional institutions (such as law enforcement and medical treatment) and service providers (many large companies).
Mequon was founded in 1871 by Joshua Mequon and his family. The town was named after the Mequon River, which flows through it. The first post office in Mequon was established in 1872. In 1886, the Mequon-Wemaha Railway was built to connect the towns of Mequon and Wemaha. The railroad served as an important transportation link during the early years of Wisconsin's industrial growth. In 1898, Mequonshire Elementary School opened its doors in what is now the center of town. By 1915, Mequonshire had become a high school and had been renamed for Colonel George Wintzell, commander of United States forces opposing Mexico during the Mexican-American War.
