The first settler, John Mequon, arrived in 1837. In 1839, the town received its charter from the Wisconsin General Assembly. At that time, it had a population of just over 100 people. In 1840, the town saw its first census when it had a population of 154 people. Mequon grew rapidly during the early years of its existence. By 1850, it had a population of 2247 people. It reached its peak during the mid-19th century with a total population of 3838 people in 1860. However, this growth stopped abruptly during the 19th century due to various factors including thinly populated areas and heavy machinery taking up space on farms which led to increased labor competition and reduced demand for goods produced by local residents. The decline in production continued until after World War I when changes came about which allowed manufacturing to resume within Milwaukee County while also opening new markets for exports outside Wisconsin. This recovery led to an increase in both population and property values throughout much of post-war America but did not result in any significant revival for Mequon until well into the 21st century reports indicate that there are only some scattered buildings remaining from earlier years
