Menomonie is located just outside of Green Bay on the eastern edge of Lake Michigan and it includes parts of what are now counties Menomonee, Winnebago and Kane. The menomonee River runs through Menomonie and forms a shared border with neighboring WIstate to the east. According to the United States Census Bureau, Menomonie has a total area of , all of it land. The first European settler in what is now Menomonie was Isaac Brockett in 1812 when he built a cabin on Ledyard Creek near present-day Paintersville. Brockett's cabin still stands today as part of Lakeshore Park in town center. In 1837, John Neely founded Neely Station on Mud Lake south of town and used his farmstead as an early stop for stagecoaches traveling between Green Bay and Chicago before developing Neely City across Rice Lake into which he donated land in 1881xto become Racine County's first county seat As towns grew around them, trade grew too; lots were sold for farming purposes hereabouts late into the 19th century even as ice cutoffs formed along both Lakeshore Rivers from west to east (the original boundaries). Other businesses soon followed suit including auto mechanics, bootleggers and other illegitimate enterprises during prohibition times One such business owner was Harry Hohlman who operated a chicken coupon stand at Third Street & State Avenue from 1911-1920 In 1922 after Prohibition ended, local merchants got together to form the "Alliance For Progress" which helped promote agricultural production while also lobbying government officials for better access to credit By 1930 there were six stores open with 400 employees providing services such as banking services, groceries etc . Although many residents continue to follow traditional ways Of life such as raising livestock or fisheries throughout their lifetime these days due largely To advances made in technology & agriculture over recent years things have definitely shifted since then... In 1854, they bought land on the northwest side of the river and built a more substantial home. In 1865, they donated their land to the town for use as a park. In 1870, Nicholas Menomonie died and his widow took over management of their holdings in Menomonie. She continued to operate her farm until her death in 1916. After her death, men operated the farm until it became part of Waukesha County in 1938. As time passed, some people in Menomonie began to insist that the name be changed to Milwaukee because this is where most of their family lived when they came to live there during World War II. However, no such change occurred and Milwaukee continue to be used as our present day municipal name throughout Wisconsin history
The Menomonie area was first settled in 1836 by French colonists. The town was named for the Menomonees, a Native American tribe that lived in the area at the time. In 1857, Menomonie became a village and in 1871, it became an incorporated municipality. The population of Menomonie reached 5,000 by 1925. By 1970, the population had shrunk to 2,500 and by 2000 it had decreased to 1,500.
