The first train reached Menomonie on October 1, 1887. The railroad was abandoned in 1912 and replaced by the Milwaukee-Eau Claire Line. On November 10, 1916, the Menomonie Unit of the Wisconsin State Highway Patrol was activated and became known as the "Menomonie ART Unit". On November 16, 1926, Route A1A opened from Menomonie east to Eau Claire. On May 17, 1941, Route A1A turned west from Menomonie to Racine. In 1958, Route A1A became part of Interstate 94 and was redesignated County Road Hwy 20. In 1970, County Road Hwy 20 became part of County Road Mkt 2 when it was created from parts of Routes A1A and Hwy 54; however it remains unsigned
Menomonie, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state ofWisconsin located on the Menomonee River, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) east of Milwaukee and 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Waukesha. The population was 995 at the 2010 census. Menomonie is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's name comes from Menomonee, which means "the place where they make cheese." The first post office in Menomonie was established in 1846, and it was renamed Menomonee Falls in 1902. In 1906, the town had a population of 150 people and became an incorporated village under the name of Menominster. The menominster name was dropped from its municipal charter in 1965 due to unpopularity with residents; however, it has been used as a ghost town designation by local farmers since then. The economy of Menomonie is largely based on agriculture; however, some manufacturing also takes place here such as clothing production for Sears Roebuck and other companies near Milwaukee or aluminum production for American Can Distributors Inc.. After years without rain events that caused flooding downstream along the river system due to melting snowpacks accumulation during winter weather patterns, rainfall increased significantly through late summer 2014 bringing much-needed life back to rivers throughout central Wisconsin resulting in improved conditions for agriculture and other activities downstream including fish populations upbridges being developed as well as new housing developments adjacent to two major retailers which have helped revive downtown businesses including ABC News headquarters which until recently only produced agricultural meet supplies before now also sells several items related to health care services such as skin lotions etc... Menomonie is a town in Barron County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from Menomonee and Oconomowoc River. The first settler in Menomonie was James A. Hickey on July 26, 1836. He and his family moved to Menomonie from Waukesha County. Hickey set up a mill on the Menomonee River and soon became known as one of the most successful business men in the area. In 1853, he married Sarah Bickerton and founded what would become known as the Hickey-Bickerton Paper Mill Company. The company operated until 1957 when it merged with another paper company to form American Paper Corporation. Today, there are several small businesses located within Menomonie; some of which still produce newspapers such as the Daily Herald and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. In addition to its role as an important center for trade within Barron County, Menomonie also played a significant role in local history during its early years. For example, it was here that Wisconsin's first school opened in 1856; Menomonie's first post office opened on November 10th, 1865; and its first library was established in 1928!
