Menomonie is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. Menomonie was first established in 1852 as a trading post on the Menomonee River. It became a city in 1912 and has since grown to be one of the largest cities in Racine County. The town of Menomonie was organized on December 14, 1852 when local citizens purchased land east of Milwaukee from Nicholas Hagedorn for $200. The site that would become Menomonie had been surveyed by Simon Cameron and others in 1837 but never developed because of its difficult terrain and lack of water resources. On October 8, 1853, men from Woodstock built the first permanent cabin in what would become Menomonie. The community grew rapidly due to its location and access to good farmland which led to its nickname "The Town on the Prairie". In 1865, the railroad reached Menomonie and began serving the community commercially; this contributed significantly to its growth over time. In 1903, Menomonie became an incorporated city with a population of 10,000 people. That year saw an important milestone for the city when it hosted World's Fair games which were attended by President Theodore Roosevelt and other major personalities from around the world. By 1920, Menonomoine had attained nearly 20000 residents while still maintaining much of its rural character; during this time it also played host to many significant events including state fairs and international meetings such as those held at Madison Square Garden in New York City during 1921-22).
