In 1836 Menomonie was founded as a town by Peter Knoppers on land granted to him by Governor David Walker It became an incorporated town in 1854 when it joined with other towns located in Winnebago County to form what is now Milwaukee County The first post office opened in Menomonie on October 6, 1853 The first store in Menomonie was established at 202 Main Street (now Wabash Avenue) by Jotham Wiener Milwaukee began reaching its current size as a city with its incorporation date January 15, 1896 Milwaukee annexed two neighboring towns on December 17th 1904- North Side (then called South Side) and West Side (then called East Side). These annexations were made possible because Milwaukee’s boundaries at that time did not include Lake Michigan which led to tension between these two municipalities over water rights

The town of Menomonie was founded in 1836 by the first settler, Capt. James K. Taylor. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1853, Menomonie became a city and its first mayor was John G. Godfrey. It continued to grow quickly until it reached its peak in the late 1800s when it had a population of over 1,500 people. However, during the early 1900s, Menomonie began to decline as agricultural production decreased and jobs were lost in the area. In the 2000s, however, Menomonie began to rebound as it saw an increase in tourism and new businesses beginning to open up in the town.
