Menomonie was named for George Menomonie. The Menomonie Railroad reached Menomonie in 1853 and started passenger service in 1854. The first post office was established in Menomonie on October 25, 1855, by James Hetherington. The present town site was laid out by John Fenton in 1857 and named after George Menonomiere, an American statesman who served as Secretary of State under President James K. Polk during the Kansas-Nebraska Crisis of 1856-1857. In 1870, Menomonie became one of thirty townships founded within Sawyer County when it was created from parts of Racine and Waukesha counties. In 1898, the name changed to its current spelling when a local referendum approved changing all official namesakes to rid of any possible confusion with neighboring towns (Waukesha and Racine). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land.

Menomonie was founded in 1854 and incorporated as a town in 1866. The name "Menomonie" comes from the Ojibwe word mani-onih or "place where people go to trade." Menomonie is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The first post office in Menomonie opened on July 14, 1854, and was closed on December 12, 1955. According to the USGS National Geodetic Survey, Menomonie has been located at (43.5609,-87.3647). The men who built up Menonomoine were very active in their community and had many accomplishments within it during its early years including: Isaac Griggs Sr., who served as justice of peace; Ezra Wohlstedt who operated a bakery; John Fenton who mined coal; David Sibley who manufactured goods for local markets; and Hiram Chilton who ran a grocery store/exchange with his brother-in-law Julius Weimer until they sold it to George Ransom in 1907. In1866 Menonomoine became one of twelve towns consolidated into the new Dodge County when that county was created from portions of Milwaukee County.. In 1886 Menonomoine's first school opening took place with thirty students grades K-12 attending morning classes while evening classes were offered for high school students grades 9-12 which continued until 1915 when night classes began due to budget cuts by then Superintendent Leland Hinson.. After World War I menomerization slowed down due to lack of jobs opportunities but resumed after1920 with more job openings soon followed . There have been many changes over time such as annexation by Racine (1927), mergers with other counties (1999), incorporation into larger cities (2011) all while still maintaining some form of governance including an elected Board Of Trustees charged with governing day-to-day operations
