Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Menomonee County. The population was 7,908 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Menomonee River and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Menomonee Falls was John Goodrich, who arrived in 1837. Goodrich's cabin still stands today near downtown Menomonee Falls. Other early settlers included Samuel Hubbard and his family, Isaac Smith, Nicholas Bendixen, John Doherty, Moses Sperry and others. In 1854 the town site was acquired by George Witte from Nicholas Bendixen for $5 per acre (equivalent to $ in ). Witte developed Menomonee Falls into a small but thriving community with a post office, schoolhouse and several businesses including a sawmill and grist mill. By 1870 the population had increased to 100 residents; by 1880 it had grown to 150; by 1890 it had reached 200 people and by 1900 it had reached 300 people. The WI Railroad came through Menomonee Falls in1892 passenger service connecting Milwaukee with Chicago via Menomonee Falls The railroad closed down in 1971 but some parts of track remain open as part of Amtrak's "Wisconsin Central" line between Chicago (IL) and Madison (WI). The Menomonee Falls area was settled by the tribe of Menomonees in 1834. The falls were first mentioned in 1785 when French traders saw a “gorgeous” waterfall on the river. In 1834, fur trader and explorer David Thompson explored the area and reported that the falls could be reached by canoe. By 1840, most of the men and women who lived near the falls had died from smallpox brought over from Great Britain. However, because of this and other factors, including gold discoveries at Sault Ste Marie (later Toronto) and Milwaukee, interest in exploring the region waned until 1854 when John C. Stevens discovered shale oil deposits under Menomonee Falls. These new sources of revenue led to increased development around Menomonee Falls, which helped support local schools and businesses during annexation into Wisconsin in 1959. Today, Menomonee Falls remains a popular tourist destination with activities such as canoeing, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking and wine tasting available throughout its year-round community atmosphere.
The Menomonee Falls Dam was built in the early 1940s to provide water for the city of Milwaukee. The dam is located on the Menomonee River, upstream from downtown Milwaukee.
