Menasha, Wisconsin is a town in the Milwaukee County, Wisconsin area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,137. The name Menasha comes from the Dakota language meaning "the place where game is found." The first settler in Menasha was Jacob Burleigh and his family who moved to Menasha in 1853. In 1864, David Kapp opened a store on Main Street which later became known as Kapp's Store. The town of Menasha was incorporated on December 13th, 1873. The first post office in the town was established at what is now West Washington Avenue on November 3rd, 1876. In 1907, J.P. McCormick & Sons began selling ice cream here and soon started selling candy as well. This led to the construction of a retail structure that still stands today – Wrigley's Ice Cream Parlor (now Butterfinger). In 1951-1952 a new high school was built here and named after Julius Erving – Julius Erving High School (now part of Marquette University). In 1963-1964 an ice rink was built and renamed “The North Pole” after then President John F Kennedy’s visit to Menasha which helped finance community projects such as renovating Stonington Elementary School which reopened in late 1966; constructing a new firehouse; remodeling First Baptist Church; expanding city services into Menasha through annexation by nearby Racine; and creating more than 50 jobs when Racine annexed it did not include all these services within its boundaries becoming known as “Racine annexed but without services” according to local historian Tom Eckerstrom when he wrote his book about this period called "A Place Called Racine" . On July 1st 1957 menaced with tornado there were some damage done including: two homes destroyed - one located at 621 N 2nd St., one located at 515 S 2nd St.; total loss $2,500 ($ today); five cars damaged or totaled - three pickups trucks two sedans one van - value unknown; power outages lasting up to 24 hours - number unknown In early September 2007 tornado touched down in western WI near Green Bay just northeast of Menasha making it one of few tornadoes ever reported so far that season
